Local police in Uttar Pradesh said they mediated between the families, and both sides returned all the gifts given before the wedding. BBC reports that the groom's family tried to convince the bride to return, but she refused saying the man was illiterate. The bride asked the groom to add 15 and six. When he replied 17, she called off the marriage.

An 18-year-old newlywed woman was allegedly gang-raped by seven men on Saturday night in Bhithali village of Shinor Taluka in Vadodara district, India, after she was kidnapped from her home.

The woman had migrated to Bhithali few days ago with her husband and in-laws in search of work. The victim's family is a native of Nishana village of Nasvadi Taluka in Chota Udepur.
