When did you find out about sex?

Posted in: , , ,
I almost said procreation in the title, but hey, we're all adults. Not that you'll know that going by the couple in this viral article that Atala brought to my attention a few days ago.

Chinese married couple clueless about sex - Yahoo! News

A highly educated couple, in their 30s from Hubei, China, thought that the wife would get pregnant by sleeping on the same bed, Malaysia's largest selling Chinese language newspaper Sin Chew Daily reported.
Prior to their marriage, the couple did not dare hold hands and kiss as they thought the woman would get pregnant by doing so, reported a China newspaper Chu Tian Jin Bao.
However, the couple decided to seek medical advice after the wife, who holds a masters degree, could not conceive.
They have been married for three years.
The doctor was shocked to learn about their "sex life".
The husband, who has a doctoral degree, said they were too focused on their studies.

Is this possible?

Laugh wan kill me die when I heard the news, and I didn't believe it until Atala showed me the links so I could see for myself. I went down memory lane about watching this Bollywood film (Jamina?) that fed into the myth then because the young actress thought she could get pregnant by kissing. You know how some of our mums, or aunts, or basically most adults would warn growing girls about talking to boys, walking with them, holding their hands, allowing them to touch you, and so on, and the bogeyman was always pregnancy.

I think by the time I got into secondary school and started devouring the novels in the library, and then was taught "the almighty reproduction" by around 14 or 15, I basically knew the nitty-gritty, if not the techniques, physics and chemistry of the whole thing. So you now know why I was laughing so much at this news. Still sha, I've had friends who were not as fast or curious as I was and did not get the memo till around 18, 19 or 20. But in your 30's, with a masters and PhD under your belts, and having lived as man and wife in the same house for three years? Atala said maybe they were asexual, ehm, it wasn't me. LOL...

Some choice thoughts from the Yahoo readers, share yours below in the comments.

"Question is; how did they get degrees while being so dumb?"

"So hard to believe. Internet was introduced to the world in 1994, 17 years ago. Even a Primary 1 child in Singapore know how to google "sex" & watch how to do it on their PC. Duh!!!"

what a load of crap, for real how did they get degrees? Did they skip elementary school?

  6. wow..this is serious.

I learnt about sex when I was 9. SADLY, maybe a lil too early tho. It all started from my Biology teacher who mentioned sum'n n me gisting with my parents about it.

It was funny, my dad wasn't smiling tho...lol
    My mum was just dumbfounded.

I think my mum n dad told me to go to bed n I started talking about, me going and them screaming...asking them what they were doing n my dad started probing as I continued...along the lines of "who told you?"...lol

I understood it clearly in grade 9 when my friend was always talking about a pencil and a sharpener n what it does...lol

  7. Can't remember specifically when I found out but we were taught reproduction in our biology class in the 'semi-final' year of secondary school. Until then there were so many scary myths about getting pregnant from just holding hands with boys, lol.

I think this couple were either asexual or had deep psychological scarring (fears instilled) regarding the issue of sex. Prolly dates back to their childhood and how they were raised.

  8. LWKMD!!! eeewwwweeee ooo..IS THIS FOR REAL? in the age of Google? hahahahah... I find the story very difficult to believe.
I found out about sex from my mum, I cant remember how old I was but she said if I let a guy touch me I would get pregnant and get a disease.(SMH). By the time i was in JSS3, I knew what sex actually meant from M&B, Paceters and the likes.

  9. ROTFL

Strange to hear of an episode like this in today's day and age!

  10. This is hilarious! By primary four, i knew it took more than lying in bed to get pregnant.

But wait o, didn't they ever touch each other, explore, that sorta thing? This is rather suspicious.

  11. I learned the facts in school during Health class in 5th and 6th grade (10 and 11 years old). But my mom had explained things even before then.

I have a really hard time believing people could get so far in their education and be so ignorant.

  12. I don't believe those couples, they might be trying to sell a story to the media.. Masters, Phd and you still dont know about sex, don't think thats possible, thats more like what a 5years old will say... To have a Masters, Phd am sure they must have had sex education, friends who are already sexually active...

    1. what if they were home schooled and biology was not one of the subjects picked for them, and also what if they've been raised to be chaste and not make contact with the opposite sex. u know how home schooled kids never leave home unless when they are with their parents. their marriage may have been arranged as well. so dont say its impossible

  13. i learnt about sex reading Mills and Boon from my dad's bookshelf in class 4. I was 8 or 9 year.
They did not study the reproductive system in school? or they were home-schooled and parents took it out? hmm

  15. loool hilarity

haha I remember the "pencil and sharpener" thing

I was one curious little child o like I had an idea when I was in elementary... but by the time I got into secondary school at 9 years old.. I think I knew more than I should.. I stole my seniors' "hints" mags from age 10 or 11 (went to boarding school) to understand lol *shame* but really, no one needs internet to know about sex sha ... it is advertised everywhere ..

the story is HARD to believe.. how did they go thru highschool and uni without knowing, didn't they do biology? lol

  16. Very funny!
forget biology, what happened to chemistry btw them? Even those living under the rock knows the usefulness of the opposite sex organs and how to toy with them.

I got to know about sex at age 8, maybe earlier than that.

  17. ah ah,it's possible nah, trust china and their silly rules and regulations on sex, maybe they were prohibited, she wants to be the next virgin Mary, they don't know about sex abi, they should have asked their parents how they came about,ok....evolution,bunkums.
I knew about sex when I got into university, yes oh and I'm always thankful I didnt fall into wrong hands else these my high shoulders for don sag,I was too preoccupied with being meeting celebs to bother about that, reproduction classes to me where just classes, they didnt sound like sex at allll,so I used to wonder why my class mates were always giggling when it was brought up,well, now I'm a paramedic,no try me oh.

  18. I remember reading about this some time back. I really don't know how one can make it to master's level of education and never encounter sex in any way, even with the culture they have.

I had to think hard about when i actually learned about sex. I guess it was sometime around age 11 or 12. I know by the time i entered middle school that I knew what sex was but I remember being 9 and still thinking you could get pregnant from a kiss on the cheek lol

  24. I am sorry Myne, but I find this really hard to believe. Even if they did not do biology, how can they sleep on the same bed for three years without being drawn to each other. Natural chemistry must work o.
As for me, I knew about sex between the age of 4 and 6.

  31. Personally, I think it that it's sweet that two people can be so blissfully ignorant in this era of cynicism when everyone knows everything at the age of two... but then, that's just me.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I had to go read it myself to know its not a joke actually. Sincerely.. it took me a while to get to know about sex but when I did, I became 'extra curious' cos of my nature to research things. I wanted to know everything about it; practice it or get my hands on it somehow. It led me to so many discoveries but thank God I knew I had to stop in my tracks before I enter yawa!

My parents then too used to make me believe if you hold a lady's hands, she'd get pregnant for you. So until my final year of secondary sch, I never had a gf. The day I mentioned to my parents that I'd seen a lady's boobs before, they nearly fainted. haha. What if I then mention the rest of the gist? hahahah

  36. OMG! Cant belief u guys are falling for this...The media business thrives on propaganda. That's the only (maybe best) way they sell. You will never pick a newspaper with headline "1000 PEOPLE GIVE LIFE TO CHRIST" But check this out instead: "1000 CRUSHED TO DEATH BY MOVING TRAIN" ....Aha! Every1 must get a copy cos it's tragic news. ...What am I saying? No 'sane' person will fall for this sort of news...But the 'fake' story funny sha. Kudos to the correspondent/reporter or whoever that thought-up the story!

    p.s off to read comments.

  44. Lol!! I must say, it is quite possible sha. And while others may choose to differ, I would say they chose to be ignorant, sex is something you choose to learn about. They ehm, made the left choice

  45. ...i don't even know what to say! smh!!!

  46. This is just too laughable to be true. Even a primary school student knows what sex is. Abeggi... Shey dem dey alright at all?

    ReplyDelete
  47. haha its so strange and funny to believe them!! yeah, m also wondering how did they manage to get their Phd and master's degrees after all?

    ReplyDelete
  48. it is possible that they may not have known about sex, despite getting higher academic degrees. in places like the west, china, malaysia, singapore etc, they have options for home schooling. the parents can take a direct approach and select only subjects relevant to the courses they want their kids to study so they may not have chosen biology as one of the subjects. when u hear kids getting phd degrees at the age of 15-20 years, they were home schooled. they did not go through the full academic programme, rather their subjects were selectively picked by their parents so the ones they considered irrelevant to the direction they want their kids to go, wont be picked. i have met a few home school kids. s trust me, they are socially awkward...
