Choosing a Scent to Wow on a First Date

Posted in: , , , ,

What you wear may have an impact on how your first date goes and the impression you make, but there aren’t many things that can leave an imprint on someone’s mind quite like an intoxicating scent. Did you know that smell is one of the closest senses to memory, and that memories of scents usually long outlast visual ones?

That’s why it’s essential that you don’t only pick a fragrance you like, but one your date will remember for all the right reasons. In this article, we’re going to give you a few tips on how to find the perfect fragrance for a first date.

Go for Something Clean and Soft

A lot of people may have questions as to which type of fragrance they should pick. Should I go for a bold scent? A woody or oriental smell? Or something more spicy or floral?

If we were to give you one piece of advice, it would be to go for something on the softer side. Go for something with a clear and fresh scent. This will not only make sure that you don’t overpower them, but a nice crisp scent conveys a sense of hygiene and cleanliness. You can’t afford to be too bold here, since you really don’t know who you’re actually dating yet. Play it safe and experiment with bolder smells once you get to know their personal taste.

Know the Difference Between Eau de Toilette, Parfum and Cologne

To this day, a lot of people may think that fragrances are all interchangeable, but knowing the difference between parfums (not to be confused with perfumes), colognes and eau de toilette is essential, especially when choosing a fragrance for a first date.

Parfum, for instance, tends to be more concentrated than other options. So, while they may have more complex scent profiles and will last longer, they will also have a tendency to leave a strong scent trail, which is not necessarily what you’re looking for while you’re on a first date.

Colognes and eau de toilettes, on the other hand, tend to be more diluted and discreet. Eau de toilettes usually have only a 4% to 10% oil concentration in them, which makes them perfect for hot and sunny days. Colognes are even more diluted, and while they are often associated with men, there are plenty of colognes for women as well. Avoid Fragrance Faux Pas

It’s one thing to pick the right fragrance, but you also have to understand a few etiquette rules as well. One of the most common mistakes people make when applying perfume is spraying it directly on their clothes or around their neck, for instance.

Applying fragrance on your neck could not only cause reactions when in contact with the sun, but could give out a bitter taste if your date happens to kiss you there. Also, refrain from applying fragrances directly on your clothes. Instead, mist the area in front of you and walk through it, preferably after a shower. This will give you a nice subtle scent that will cover your whole body without being overpowering.

While choosing the perfect fragrance for a date shouldn’t be difficult, it shouldn’t be left to chance either. Follow the few simple tips in this article and you’ll be able to woo your date and possibly bag a second date!
