Oscar Pistorius Sentenced To 5 Years in Prison But Will Spend Only About 10 Months

Oscar Pistorius has been sentenced to 5 years in prison for the killing of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine's Day in 2013.

Judge Thokozile Masipa said she considered the following before coming to her decision on what his sentence should be. That he gets 5 years in prison for the initial conviction of culpable homicide. That he gets 3 years in prison for the Tasha shooting which he was also found guilty of. However, the second sentence is wholly suspended for 5 years with conditions, and the two sentences will run concurrently.

As the sentencing hearing for Oscar Pistorius continues, it has emerged that he offered a large sum of money to his dead girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp's parents after he shot her to death. However, the family rejected the offer of $34,000 as "blood money".

Pistorius' offer of the lump sum to the Steenkamp family was revealed during the cross-examination of defence witness. It was said that Pistorius had raised the funds from selling his car.

Oscar Pistorius has been found guilty of culpable homicide for the fatal shooting of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine's Day last year.

The guilty verdict on the manslaughter charge, a day after the judge Thokozile Masipa cleared him of murder, means Pistorius could receive anything from 15 years in prison to a suspended sentence, which would potentially allow the double amputee a chance to resurrect his sporting career.

The charge of culpable homicide carries a minimum sentence of a fine, or up to 10 years in prison, according to the discretion of the judge.

He has been granted extended bail, and will be sentenced October 13.

Oscar Pistorius did not commit murder the night he killed Reeva Steenkamp, but his conduct was "negligent," the judge at his trial said, suggesting she will find the Olympian guilty of culpable homicide.

There is no minimum sentence for culpable homicide in South African law. It's up to the judge to decide.

He did not intend to kill her, Judge Thokozile Masipa said.

As he fired four bullets into the bathroom of his home in Pretoria on Valentine's Day last year, he did not foresee the "possibility that he would kill the person behind the door, let alone the deceased, as he thought she was in the bedroom at the time," Masipa said.

A panel of psychiatrists has found that Oscar Pistorius did not suffer from any mental illness that impacted his ability to know right from wrong when he fatally shot his girlfriend.

Pistorius, a double-amputee Olympic sprinter, has spent a month as an outpatient at Weskoppies Psychiatric Hospital in Pretoria, South Africa, for a mental evaluation that the judge in his murder trial ordered.

The results state that Oscar Pistorius was able to understand the wrongfulness of what he had done, and appeared to remove the possibility that he could be declared not guilty because of a mental disorder. This would have meant that instead of prison for a guilty verdict, he would have been referred to a state psychiatric institute for care.
