Colored Wedding Gowns and Non-Traditional Brides

Posted in: , , , ,

I have blogged before about unique or non traditional brides and grooms, but today, I'll be asking about colored wedding gowns. Is it a do or don't for you? My interest was piqued when I heard that Kelis used a green gown when she got married to Nas. So below, I have collected some examples that I really love, from Red, to orange, blue, pink, green, and even black.

By the way, these are all real weddings and you can see more pictures by clicking on the links below.

Red Wedding Gown, Orange Wedding Gown, Blue Wedding Gown, Black Wedding Gown, Green Wedding Gown, Pink Wedding Gown

So how adventurous are you? Which color might you even consider?

  1. I have never wanted a traditional wedding gown, I never had those white, cream or ivory fantasies ever! It is not for me. I see myself very adventurous. I may have to hide my dress from family or they may criticize...yup, that adventurous.

  6. The so called traditional white wedding gown only came into existence during Queen Victoria's reign i think she wore a white dress to her wedding or something like that and started the whole white wedding dress craze. Before that women wore their sunday best to their weddings or if they had a bit of money they made a new outfit that they could still wear to another occasion the colour did not matter i read somewhere that most were usually dark coloured to avoid them getting too dirty. I personally am not a traditional kind of girl and will probably not be wearing a "traditional" gown as well i am not willing to compromise my taste and style for anyone. We tend to forget that the "white wedding" aka "church wedding" is a borrowed western tradition so i don't know why some moms lose sleep over their daughter's not wanting to wear traditional gowns. My cousini chose to wear an ivory gown at her wedding a while back we are yet to hear the last of it from the aunties.

    1. Nice do you mind sharing your photos? would love to see the dress. Meanwhile with second dresses for the reception coming in all sorts of colors i wouldn't be suprised if more brides opt for a color other than white for the church ceremony.

  9. I had a non traditional gold skirt and blouse for my wedding. Loved it, and so did everyone else. I'd wear it out now if I could still fit into it. Alas, that was 12 years ago when there was less of me :).

  11. I love colors and I never wear white coz I become too aware of what i'm wearing, making sure i don't stain it. But i've always dreamt of my wedding in white. That's the one day I will wear white hehe.

  12. I think these days brides are breaking out from the traditions that have been shoved on them for generations and doing what they actually want to do. Weddings are a very creative affair now, with almost everything being a representation of the bride and groom and their tastes. It's all about doing what's best for you and feeling beautiful on your wedding day :)

I did wear white and I wouldn't have had it any other way. I loved my dress and it was the only time I have ever worn white. I just never wear it in everyday life! LOL!!

I used to be a wedding florist and I had a wedding where the bride wore red and the bridesmaids wore white! :) No one knew about it beforehand.

  16. i wore ivory, my mom was not too happy when i told her but when she saw the dress she thought it looked white and was fine as long as i wasnt standing beside someone wearing stark white

  17. For me am going for the white. Even my groom insists on wearing white. For the reception I'll have something coloured (and make sure he does too)

  18. Is it weird that I think the Black wedding gown is the prettiest?

  19. Wedding for me has always been about self, you do what makes you happy. I don’t see myself in a coloured dress though.

  20. It'll be white or ivory for me. I don't think I'm that adventurous even "The Second Dress" will be either of those colours or GOLD! :)

  22. I wanted a lilac dress and my mum and grand aunt nearly had heart attacks when we went to the bridal shop and heard me talking to the lady in the shop discuss the dress. Even the bridal consultant discouraged my choice,

I got another dressmaker and compromised, I used a white dress overlaid with lilac lace, and had purple trimmings and headpiece . I loved it and all my friends did too and mum and aunt were happy.

  25. Hmm, this is a good idea o. At least, no where in the bible says we must wear white dress when getting married.

Time for me to rebel against the norms.

  27. I would love to sparkle! I'm such a magpie :) I would wear something more silver than white......

  28. I've thought of wearing pink but since scarlet's my favourite colour, wouldn't it be great to wear a scarlet gown? Nice, now u got me thinking.........

  29. I can wear pale blue, but whatever I wear will be a full gown. No knee lengths or mini for me.

  30. My culture is mixed and I am western by southwestern. For us red and black are good luck and white in most of the culture is for death. I ran across your blog when I just started my search for a red wedding dress. I do wish you could get any wedding dress in any color!!

  31. For me, it is cream or white
the most i can do is add a bright colored sash

  32. white or baby pink for me when its tym

  33. I don't like the traditional white gown. I prefer something more edgy. I once saw an ivory n wine dress by Alfred Angelo. It is so beautiful. Another colour I'll love is blush pink so far Hubby won't faint.
