Toke Makinwa, in her latest video, has listed some of the common (mis)conceptions and stereotypes a lot of people have concerning dating others of a different race. This is for those who are even open to inter-racial dating, there is of course the side-eye that inter-racial couples sometimes receive from those outside their relationship.
For instance a lot of ladies think of non-Nigerian or European men
1. They are so calm and romantic (positive compared to loud and pragmatic Nigerian men)
2. No large or extended family (Can be positive or negative - Toke explains)
3. Will consider divorce if things don't work out (Negative for many Nigerian women - I wonder why?)
On the other hand, Nigerian men who date outside the nationality or race may think;
1. Nigerian/black women are too traditional (negative - translates to clingy and limiting)
2. Only a naija woman can cook like this! (positive of course)
3. She probably has family around (can be good or bad if it leads to drama)
This reminds me of these two posts I read recently - All the good Nigerian stand up by Okeoghene and Vera's 12 Top Reasons Why Igbo and Yoruba should not marry each other.
Paraphrasing Toke and Okeoghene, people are good or bad irrespective of their nationality or race. Period.
I like the comment you made on FB. It really doesn't matter if you're black or white. All relationships have their differences irrespective of race.
