4 Reasons to Celebrate Being Single

In the rush to meet that perfect someone it’s easy to forget just how great it is being single. As a lone rider you get to do what you want, when you want and with whomever you want.

2013 was dubbed ‘the year of being single’ after the UK census revealed that for the first time there were more single-person households than married-couple households. By 2031, the Government Office for Science says that singletons are on course to become the biggest type of household.

With the number of singles on the rise, there’s even more scope for reaping the rewards that flying solo can bring. Here are just some of the benefits.

1. Single people are fitter – literally. A poll commissioned by the Department of Health revealed that married people were far less likely to take the recommended 150 minutes of exercise per week than their unmarried counterparts.

2. Single people have better social lives. It’s a lesser known fact that couples spend so much time on the sofa that they start to chemically bond with them. Singles on the other hand tend to hang out with friends, neighbours, work colleagues – and relish the chance of meeting new people.

A longitudinal study published in the Journal of Gerontology reported that people over the age of 35 living with a partner (or spouse) were less likely to spend an evening socializing with others than their unattached counterparts.

3. Single people have more interesting sex lives. Those with partners might get more sex, but it’s always with the same person. Single people, by contrast, can play the field and enjoy the altered state of consciousness that is lust.

4. Singles get more ‘me’ time. Indulging in your favourite activities is one of life’s greatest pleasures – whether that’s travel to foreign lands or focusing on creating a piece of art. This ability to be spontaneous is highly undervalued and well worth cherishing. The moment a relationship starts, the name of the game will be compromise.

The take-home message here is that single people are more fun and interesting than those who are members of the couple club. The irony of course is that the more you embrace your singleism, the more likely it is that someone will want to relieve you of it. So enjoy it while it lasts!
