A 44-year-old married man found out that he was actually a woman having a period after he went to the hospital to get treatment for stomachaches and blood in his urine.
The married man from Zhejiang province in China went to see his local doctor who told him that he was actually a woman.
Before the shocking news, doctors had the man undergo a full body examination and found that besides having a penis, the man had a full set of female reproductive organs.
The man, who had allegedly been married to his wife for more than a decade, also lacked an Adam's apple and possessed genitals that were different from other men.
According to the Daily Mail, doctors from the First People's Hospital of Yongkang initially had no idea that Mr. Chen was a female. Said a spokesman for the hospital.
"He was wearing men's clothes with short hair, so we didn't think that he would be a female at the beginning."
Mr. Chen first suspected his health after experiencing constant fatigue, swollen face and legs and bloody urine.
After undergoing computerized tomography scans, he was told that he possessed a uterus and ovaries. Genetic tests also revealed that Mr. Chen had a pair of XX sex chromosomes.
Doctors said that Mr. Chen also suffered from Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia, a genetic disease that causes a decrease in stress hormones and an increase in male sex hormones, which leads to swollen adrenal glands.
While surgeons later removed a lump from Mr. Chen's adrenal glands, they said it was too late for him to seek medical treatment. Currently, treatment for this extremely rare condition is only effective on younger patients.
Doctors have not yet confirmed whether Mr. Chen was a hermaphrodite or intersex. However, they did note that he appeared to have the two types - male and female - of genitalia.
