Joan Collins Reveals Why She Married Actor Who Drugged and Raped Her At 17

Posted in: , ,

81 year old Joan Collins has spoken on camera for the first time about being raped by her now dead first husband Maxwell Reed when she was just seventeen years old. The actress and writer, pictured with him above in the 60s, was speaking to former Israeli Miss World, Linor Abargil, who was raped herself six weeks before being crowned the title.

The interview appears in Brave Miss World, a documentary on sexual violence put together by former Israeli Miss World, Linor Abargil, travel the globe meeting fellow victims.

Linor was raped at the age of 18 in 1998. Now 34, married and with her own children, the former Miss World has made it her life's mission to encourage other women to speak out.

In her narration, Joan Collins said the attack occurred while she was on a date with Maxwell Reed, who went on to be her first husband – he passed away in 1974. On the evening Michael went to take a bath leaving a young and somewhat naïve Joan to read some books and drink a rum and coke. But the book was not what Joan was used to, Dailymail reports.

"The books were porn, which I’d never seen before. Hardcore porn.”The next thing I knew, I was out flat on the sofa in that living room and he was raping me.And what he had given me was a drug. He had drugged my drink.

It was what is called in those days a Mickey Finn. Which I think today would be Rohypnol. It felt so horrible. That I...that I'd done this thing.

The star goes on to admit the guilt she felt following the incident.

"It wasn’t my fault but I didn’t know, I went out with him. And maybe I shouldn’t have gone out with him. He was much older than me, and he was a famous star.

And anyway the bottom line is that he called me, and I went out with him again. And after I'd been going out with him for a few months, he asked me to marry him.

And I thought, "Well I better because you know, he took my virginity." I really hated him, but I was so filled with guilt, that he had done this thing to me.

It took a long time to be able to really trust any man."

  1. If you are raped you should go to the police and report the incident, not head off to the registry to get a marriage licence. It's situations like these that make some people fail to take rape victims seriously.
