After almost 65 years of the Miss World pageants, and just as more and more public figures are embracing showing off more skin in public, the organizers of the premier beauty pageant in the world have turned their back on the nudity trend.
The Miss World pageant owners have announced that there will be no swimsuit segment starting from next year's competition. The organization’s chairwoman Julia Morley made the announcement recently.
“The organization has decided to take itself out of the swimsuit world because it isn’t the path they’re trying to take. It’s not just a beauty contest, it’s ‘beauty with a purpose’. There didn’t seem to be a purpose to have the swimsuit.”
In an interview with Elle, Julia Morley went further to explain the thinking behind the decision:
'I really... don't need to see women just walking up and down in bikinis. It doesn't do anything for the woman. And it doesn't do anything for any of us. I don't care if someone has a bottom two inches bigger than someone else's.
We are really not looking at her bottom. We are really listening to her speak. We don't want to just make them feel like they are walking bodies, you know?'
Medical student, Rolene Strauss of South Africa, emerged the winner of the last Miss World Pageant, the 64th annual such event. Below are a few bikini pictures from the Miss World Pageants over the years, the first is from 1965 , and the others from the 55th pageant in 2005.
