Erica and Carlos Morales had struggled for years to get pregnant and they finally conceived quadruplets after fertility treatment. Erica was surprised to be expecting 4 babies, but she was looking forward to being a mother at last, and was healthy throughout her pregnancy.
Erica and her husband also discussed baby names. They settled on Carlos Jr. for the boy and Tracey and Paisley for the two girls. Erica couldn’t decide on the other girl’s name. They thought they had plenty of time to figure it out. Tragically, over a month to her due date, her blood pressure became elevated and she was rushed to the hospital.
On the 16th of January 2015, at 31 weeks pregnant, Erica delivered three girls and a boy at the Banner Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona but hours later, Erica went into hypovolemic shock and passed away. She never got a chance to hold her babies in her arms.
Her husband and entire family fell into a state of mourning but they had to stay strong for the 4 babieswho need all their love and care. The babies got the names their parents had planned, Carlos Jr, Paisley, Tracy, and the last girl was named Erica after her late mom.
One of the friends of the family started a GoFundme page to help the new dad and widower cope. She wrote;
We are raising money to provide for 4 beautiful babies left behind after their mother passed away just hours after their birth any amount is appreciated. My best friend and her husband Carlos have tried for the last few years to have a baby and with their Dr.'s help they were blessed with not 1 but 4 beautiful children, but with that blessing came the most unimaginable tragedy my best friend was lost. The expense of raising 4 children alone is quite daunting for any middle class family now the with the loss of Erica's income her husband will need all the help he can get. This is an extremely emotional time, Erica's passing is traumatic and my goal is to help ease the financial worry as much as possible so every dollar helps if it's $1 or $1000 it will all be used to provide for the beautiful babies Erica fought so hard to have and in the end gave her life for.
A month after the fund raiser started, there was an update on how well the quads were doing;
Babies: They are all doing well getting stronger each day and may even be coming soon they're all right around 4 lbs . They've been taken out of their incubators which means they're able to maintain their temperature all by themselves and they're feeding from bottles instead of tubes.
Carlos is doing fine he's enjoying the babies.
2 months later, Carlos is back home with all 4 of the quads. He is working hard to care for his children and thanks to kindhearted strangers, has received over $382,000 in donations raised. He wrote;
All 4 of the babies are finally home together again. I want to Thank everyone for the support and the continued Prayers and we'll wishes it's been so very helpful receiving words of comfort along with the donations but enough of my talking let's see some babies!!!!
As for their plans for the future, Carlos says it is hard to say. The devout Catholic says his faith has helped him through so far. He tells People Mag;
“When I’m alone at home I still tell myself that I hope I’m dreaming…Erica was the most special person in the world and she should be here to love her babies.”
Just recently he found a note that she had written on her iPad. She had jotted down her dreams for her children to go to college, speak both English and Spanish and to have good jobs. He says he will try his best to make that happen.
