How Important is Physical Attraction In A Relationship Versus Other Traits?

Posted in: , , , , ,

By Jenna Brown

Dating can be a difficult fact of life. We strive to present our best selves but struggle with the ins and outs of dating. There's the primping, the prepping, and the awkward moments that are so inevitable. It comes with the territory of being alone with someone you barely know. But that is just the beginning of the courtship.

With all of the stress of looking your best, the ultimate question arises: how important is physical attraction in a relationship? For some couples, they may find that physical attraction is no different than any other desired trait, while for others it could be the foot in the door that grabs their attention.

The dating world is a lot like a battlefield where you must constantly put your best foot forward to succeed while still protecting yourself from attacks that may come. The difference is, it's a battle that both parties can win. As complex as dating is, people are really seeking basic desires when it comes to finding their partner. These include;

Why President Jonathan Should Be Ashamed Of the #BringBackGoodluck2015 Campaign

Posted in: , ,

When I first saw a billboard with the hashtag #BringBackGoodluck2015 on my newsfeeds, I didn't want to believe my eyes, that image looked photoshopped. But with this new picture above, the reality of the campaign cannot be denied.

Whether President Goodluck Jonathan's political campaign machine is behind these posters, or they are from an independent backer, it is appalling that no one in his camp has come out to plainly condemn it.

It is pitiful and depressing that while the over 200 girls kidnapped by Boko Haram are yet to be found and returned to their families, it is all business as usual for the president and his political cronies. Shame on them!

The Washington Post has written a brief oped about president Jonathan's supporters using the #bringback hashtag for his campaign. I hope some people are reading;

WHO Says Ebola Death Toll Is Now Over 2,000 With Thousands More Cases Expected in Liberia

Posted in: , ,

The death toll from the worst Ebola outbreak in history has risen to at least 2,296 out of 4,293 cases in five West African countries, the World Health Organization said Tuesday September 9th. The director of WHO’s department of pandemic and epidemic diseases, Sylvie Briand, said this in Geneva;

"We know that the numbers are under-estimated. We are currently working to estimate the under-estimation. It’s a war against this virus. It’s a very difficult war. What we try now is to win some battles at least in some places.”

The death toll, according to WHO, jumped by almost 200 in a single day and the figure was as of September 6th. WHO also said it did not have new figures for Liberia, the worst-affected country so far, suggesting the real number is higher than 2,296.

Meanwhile, the WHO has also predicted that Liberia would see thousands of new cases of Ebola virus in coming weeks as the virus was spreading exponentially.

Janay Rice Inspires #WhyIStayed Stories By Beverly Gooden And Other Abused Women

Posted in: , ,

I've never been in an abusive relationship, and when I saw the video of Janay Rice being punched in the head by her then fiance, I just couldn't imagine why she went on to marry him. Beverly Gooden has been in one, and she knows what could be driving Janay Rice.

Seeing many on social media calling out Janay especially after she released a statement defending her NFL player husband, Beverly decided to change the conversation. She called on her followers to share their stories of domestic abuse with the hashtag #WhyIStayed in an effort to draw awareness to the complexities of domestic violence. She wrote on her website;

For over a year, I was physically abused by my ex-husband. When TMZ released the video of Ray Rice punching, dragging, and spitting on his wife this morning, the internet exploded with questions about her. Why didn't she leave? Why did she marry him? Why did she stay?

I can't speak for Janay Rice, but I can speak for Beverly Gooden. Why did I stay? Check out some of my reasons here. Leaving was a process, not an event. And sometimes it takes awhile to navigate through the process.

I believe in storytelling. I believe in the power of shared experience. I believe that we find strength in community. That is why I created this hashtag. I hope those tweeting using #WhyIStayed find a voice, find love, find compassion, and find hope.

Check out some of the touching tweets below. I'm happy especially with those who add #WhyIleft to show they have put the abuse and abuser behind them.

Please Marry Me! From Desire to Desperation by Kehinde Ajose

Posted in: , ,

THESE days my heart cries when I see individuals who are desperate to get married; who can do anything whatsoever to get that ring on their finger.

A desperate person is someone who feels she has no hope and is ready to do anything to satisfy this burning need. I read the tale of woe of two individuals that will be getting married in a couple of months. I will call them Emeka and Lola (real names withheld). Lola is in her late 30s and her desire to find the right guy has gone from hopefully optimistic to desperation so much that after only three months of knowing Emeka, she’s decided to marry him.

The thing about Emeka is that he is the complete opposite of Lola. She is obsessively neat; but Emeka never learns to clean up himself. She is an independent career woman; he has a chauvinistic streak a mile way. She manages her money well; but he buys based on what he wants rather than what he can afford…and the list goes on. They fight constantly to the point that it is uncomfortable to be around them. With the wedding only two months away, the only thing left to ask is:

“Why would she want to marry a man who is obviously incompatible with her?”
