About a month ago, the news were abuzz about the racism that has been observed in the TV Show. Two African American men had sued ABC and the show producers for not giving them the same chance to get on as contestants on the show as other white applicants. The cited their short auditions and the fact that since the inception of the show, no African American has been the star of the show, and there had only been a handful of black or minority contestants.Lerone [ABC.com]
At this point, after watching 5 of the series back to back, I am even wondering whether they should even bother. The show seems to be losing its shine for me. Of the five couples I watched hook up, only one pair are still together. Funny thing is, apart from one of them, I saw their breakup on the cards even before the finales rolled. It was as if they undermine themselves, maybe they're really not there to find love or someone to marry, but just to be on TV and get to kiss and see as many women as they can. Hmpf.
I'm still watching though, let's see what Emily does with her season. Maybe being a single mom will mean that she is more focused and knows what she wants.
Myne: I wouldn't count on seeing more African-American men represented on the Bachelor or Bachelorette. The excuse I expect them to use is "ratings" and that's the same reason there are very few leading African-American lead actors on Primetime TV. I have watched several episodes of both the Bachelor and Bachelorette and have come to conclude that they few "token" African-Americans on the show are just there for the sake of "diversity." They typically get eliminated early on like you rightly pointed out.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you there. Let's see how the court case goes.
