My First IVF Experience

Posted in: , , , , ,

I think I first heard about IVF in my late teens. This couple, our family friends, had not conceived in almost twenty years of marriage and the woman later had twins through IVF. This was in the 90s and it was called test-tube baby. Luckily for me, my parents were overjoyed for her and though it was announced on sorta like the hush-hush, it wasn't too secret either and those in our social circle did not treat her with stigma.

So when the doctor adviced us to consider IVF, I did not feel like over my dead body! or think that I would be breaking some news so unique and unfathomable to my parents. We had also kept them in the loop as needed especially with the big laparoscopy surgery that required anesthesia. Picture below.

Now, some people assume or may be thinking this story will end in a positive - with either the announcement of a pregnancy or a biological baby. Being Christians, most of us are used to certain types of testimonies, and there's nothing wrong with that, but I'm simply blogging to tell my story. This story may be different from most you've come across and it may not go the way you'll like.

Yes, I'm not telling my story to make anyone happy, or to increase anyone's Christian faith. However, if in raising the profile of infertility and exploring a different path to parenting, those happen, that is fine too :)

Anyway, we agreed to go the IVF route, and scheduled a cycle. My reaction after that was to try to find out how long it would take for us to have a child and what we could do to make sure it worked. I read up on the statistics and found blogs to read the personal accounts. What I found out was that there were no certainties about how long it will take or if treatment will ever work. Nor are there any kind of magic formula that will guarantee success.

We did the best in our power. We both cut down on coffee, cut out alcohol, and brought our weight to healthier levels. That was around the same time I did the Bouri weight loss programme and that also helped me to ensure we ate better and healthier. We also researched our doctor and his rates are good, comparable and in some cases better than the others in our area. The rest was up to God's plan and purpose for us.

Brief info - During the IVF treatment, the woman is shot up with a cocktail of hormones in order to control her production of eggs. First birth control pills, and then one after the other of different pills and injectables. At the end of that, eggs are harvested, the sperm is put into it, and when the doctor is satisfied that the result is developing as a healthy embryo, it is transferred back into the woman.

Now, I hate injections with a passion but for about a month, I gritted my teeth and bore it as either Atala or the nurses at the doctor's office pushed needles into my tummy or butt and pumped varying amounts of liquid medicine into me. And then it was the day of the egg retrieval.

To be continued...

Wonderful way to share your journey and u will be surprised at the testimonies that will ff because u will be giving hope (only God that gives though) to lots of women out there who are not strong enough or are scared to go out there and do what they have to do and one of these surprises will be a testimony of your OWN too n that of your Husband, so shall it be in Jesus name I pray and wish for you my darling Myne, Amen!!!

  7. I have never commented here before but ... Right now, I am in tears not for you but because of my experience in the last ten years.
In my case, my husband has very low sperm count. After trying for a couple years to boost it through conventional and traditional medicine, we decided to go the IVF/ICSI way.
I have been through the painful, harrowing cultivation and retrieval of eggs thrice and the result, negative. Infact, in one instance, the first test result was slightly positive (whatever that means)and two weeks later, the result was negative.
I have never told anyone except my sister that my husband has low sperm count and as a result, people particularly his family assume I am the 'problem'.
Just last month, my sister expressed concern about my age (I am 38) and my lack of 'time'. She also said another lady might eventually bring a child and claim it is for my husband if my husband succumbs to family pressure to try someone else.
My husband loves me but he is afterall only human.I can not even express my fear and sorrow right now

    1. I think your husband should confide in his family. He should not let the pressure fall on you alone. When they know it is not your fault, no one will push another woman to him.

  8. @anonymous 2:04, why don't your husband tell his family the reality, i dont think its fair to let them assume is you and put all the pressure on him to try someone else.

    @ Myne, e-hugs

So i understand fully, the needle is very long and painful
But when you get your baby, it would be worth it.

Cheers and i pray God answers your prayers or your hopes and the egg gets fertilized...

  23. 2 close friends of mine (husband and wife) just went through an IVF cycle, needless to say I was gutted to see results come out negative. They intend to take a break and access the situation before they decide if they wanna go through another cycle.

My heart and prayers are with them, it feels as though I am the one going through the cycle, was involved every step of the way with visits to the hospital, picking them up from the airport (they live in the UK) and getting daily updates on the progress made.

My wife has suggested they adopt, but am saying they should give it one more shot. I believe it will come through for them soon. The chap was our christian leader during youth service, so while we pray, we still waiting for the next IVF iteration.

Myne, you are not alone and by the grace of GOD, you shall be with child (either through IVF or the normal process).

  24. I hate needles with a passion i always ask for alternatives to injections if available i avoid needles at all costs. I have made an interesting observation on IVF i know about three couples that went this route and they all had boy and girl twins i wonder if there is a medical explanation for this i am yet to hear of same sex twins though IVF....Myne next time you are goinf for any injections think of a warm sandy beach that's my copping mechanism:)
