Natural Indian or Peruvian Hair Extensions Vs Synthetic?

Posted in: , , ,

Before I go on, let me state categorically that I do NOT believe in possessed hair extensions, natural or synthetic. Even before natural Indian hair extensions became popular in the Nigerian market, such stories as the one below have always made the rounds in Christian and secular circles. I guess they are meant to discourage those who some pastor or spiritual types think want to look "better than God made them". It may also be a way of staking authority over women's bodies, minds and actions.

A contact on Facebook tagged me in the above ad for their hair extension business, and before long, they had to qualify it with this quote. - "Mide's Mane is not Brazilian/Indian/Peruvian. It is luxury virgin hair designed specifically under the brand name." I'm guessing they got some questions and negative comments on their initial pictures. If you haven't heard or read about how this distinction between natural and synthetic extensions might be necessary, and why synthetic may be preferable, read Rachel Edjeren's story.

I think it's good that Rachel followed her spirit, but trying to cause mass hysteria, or foisting her fears and insecurities on others is another thing altogether. I wear my hair unrelaxed but that does not rule out using extensions, and even then, I will not try to use my own justifications for cutting my hair to shoe horn or scare other women into doing the same.

What do you guys think?

BTW, before Rachel came up with her dream, Josy had already written a captivating fiction series about this topic on her blog. You will be scared reading it, in a good or bad way, your call.

PS, for those interested in Mide's Mane hair extensions, they have an easter sale going on. Check it out HERE. This is not a sponsored post.

  1. I do not believe that all the hair that comes from India are sacrificed to Gods. India is a large country with many religions; Hindus, Sikhs, Muslims and Christians..all the hair cannot be coming just from Hindu women. But I did read some years ago that Jewish women no longer took human hair from Asia, for this reason and they take their hair from Europe now.

I have never worn human hair and I likely never will. It grosses me out to wear something that was once growing out of someone's head. Further to that, even if I didn't find it icky, it's part of my pride as a black woman knowing that the hair that grows out of my head is not considered worthy to be worn by others, so theirs isn't worthy for me to wear either. I find it bizarre how so many black women gush over these strange hair, there is even a totem pole and if you say you wear a certain type you are considered as up there. Yet, none of the others gushes over coily African hair, nobody wants it, it considered trash to them.

For those who have no trouble wearing the hair of these other women that's their prerogative. I will stick with synthetics.

  2. Well if that's what happened to her, lets not knock her. I have had similar spiritual convictions about some human hair but I haven't shared the story with anyone. Besides anything can be possessed even Ankara and food. Have u seen a Yoruba butcher do incantations over an animal before killing it. Well I have. I have seen blacksmiths chant incantations before fashioning ironwork. Stuff like knives, mundane everyday things that even spiri Christians use.
However, I don't believe in blanket statements or recommendations. What is the difference technically between using human hair and getting a kidney transplant? Sure, one is life saving but still it is from another person.
I am working towards where I can wear my negro hair without feeling uncomfortable. Why should I aspire towards looking Caucasian or Asian. I'm black for crying out loud.

  3. I really dnt get the disclaimer,if its virgin hair then its from someones head n that someone has roots so saying its not brazilian, indian or peruvian is pointless

  12. First off I want to say excellent blog! I had a
quick question that I'd like to ask if you don't mind.

I was curious to know how you center yourself and clear your
mind prior to writing. I've had a tough time clearing my mind in getting
my thoughts out. I truly do enjoy writing but it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes are lost just trying to figure out how to begin.

Any suggestions or tips? Appreciate it!
