My Oga at the Top - Which Side are You On?

Posted in: ,

I said it before that I actually pity the NSCDC commandant that his TV Interview fumble went viral because none of us is above mistakes. I think we took the joke too far, the man is mediocre, he lies and he is an unrepentant incompetent, true, but should the reporters have magnified all this with the website question? I don't know. Do you think all his ogas at the top did not see all this before he was made a commandant? The man is simply a sympton of what ails the Nigerian bureaucracy, and simply mocking him helps nothing.

There has been some reports that he was suspended, but they are unconfirmed and there are other reports seemingly from the NSCDC that says he hasn't. I read a few posts today that got me thinking of this issue again, the main one being an article on Naijastories in defense of the commandant.

Mr. Obafaiye Shem did not grow up in the internet-age. He never had to google a difficult concept for his assignments. He probably keeps an address book and diary for important places, and if you ask him for the physical address of his office, he most likely knows it. He grew up learning physical addresses, not web addresses. He is no different from today’s children who have stored thousands of web addresses in their memory, yet do not know their house number, and have to make several phone calls when filling their physical address in a form. Maybe we needed this incident to remind us of the technology disconnect – the digital divide that separates cultures, and generations. How many offices in the civil service have computers?

Shem’s ignorance of the organization’s website is the lesser evil, and we still remain blinded to the real issues. We have sensationalized the issue, creating tunes, tee-shirts and baseball caps to distract us from the real problems we have. The question should not be “How could he not know the website?” It should be “What is the state of information technology diffusion in the civil service?” Do you know that the Nigerian Police Force does not keep a computerized database? Have you realized that when cases are reported, they keep the records in loose sheets that can be blown away by the wind?

Some journalists stooped to muckraking and victimization, and we join them in humiliating Shem for an offence that could have very easily been committed by any of our parents with even more educational qualifications than he. They could very easily have let that question go, instead of their derisive insistence that led to his saying the now classic www.nscdc that’s all. Journalists are supposed to treat their interviewees as customers; interviewees are not supposed to be embarrassed. There is no acceptable justification for the way the Channels Sunrise Daily interview team managed the situation. Their exploitation of Shem’s ignorance is tantamount to ‘unprofessionalism’. It is a very low comedy, with no developmental value. While I acknowledge the classical functions of journalism as information, education and entertainment, I believe that these should be underscored by value, by relevance to development. What those interviewers have succeeded in doing is to generate distrust between public officers and journalists. [Efadel]

Efadel got some robust comments to her piece, from readers who disagreed and felt that the outrage was justly deserved.

From Ablyguy;

Well, I’ll totally go the opposite direction. Shem is a COMMANDANT and therefore deserves what he got. He didn’t know or forgot NSCDC website which is supposed to be a friendly platform for communicating with the public. His ignorance of the website is an insult to the public because it shows we never mattered to them. What the public did was only to send a message to them that we do matter. That is not what even bothers me in his gaffe. What bothers me is the way he handled the situation, like some primary school boy who is afraid of his papa. How would such persons handle sensitive and urgent matters required of him as a leader?

About the journalists, they did nothing wrong. They were simply educating the public on the kind of individuals at the helm of important and sensitive government organisations like NSCDC. No wonder this organisations contribute nothing to the development of the nation. Channels TV did well by not playing down the issue. As small as you think Shem’s gaffe is, it says a whole lot more. Masking this kind of things is the major reason we don’t move forward. The same thing happened to ex-Italian President, Mccain, Patience etc and they were fried for it. So why defend Shem. It’s unfortunate he had to be suspended after displaying his unflinching loyalty to his Oga. An officer from the same NSCDC mentioned Nairaland as a list of websites created to offer sham job recruitment offers to the public. So you see, this is not an individual thing. The whole NSCDC operates in ignorance. Thank god for journalism, if not we wouldn’t have known.

And from Topazo;

His incompetence is just a glimpse into the massive level of mediocrity that is pervasive in our leadership, and it shouldn’t be overlooked or swept under the carpet. if it was, then we would be celebrating incompetence and mediocrity. Let’s crucify him so that the leaders and those aspiring to leadership will embrace the culture of excellence. if we don’t then there’s no hope for tomorrow.

... I love the viral nature of the spread of the ridicule, it’s a message to the government and those in power, we are watching you! we won’t hesitate to wash you if you mess up. that’s the nature of democracy, the judgement belongs to the people, power belongs to the people and the leaders are only custodians. Now all public officials granting interviews from henceforth will go prepared and watch what they say and not just coming on air to insult our intelligence with their rubbish. we aren’t dumb!

Ginger also blogged her own opinion, and thinks he should come back to the public and apologise and also give the correct website details.

Where do you stand?

PS - Commandant Shem has NOT been sacked. via Vangard

  1. To be fair, its not the lack of technological knowledge e.g. internet that baffles me. Its the referral to his Manager. My Oga at the top. I find it hilarious..

They should have up-to-date IT training in place to help and support employees, and why he was dismissed is beyond me. I have no clue. Except if they were training, he didnt attend.

    1. Trying to crucify the journalists would only make us guilty of the same thing we condemn, its an unfortunate situation that we can all learn from. Incompetence has ruined our country at different levels and we should not let our sentiments enthrone mediocrity. If Shem didn't grow up in the jet age, we are sorry, but that is the age we are in and we need to contend with the situations of our age. So let's empower the competent and the knowledgeable ones among us. Its sad that people finish their education and employment is given to those who do not merit it, what then is the essence of education? Are we not bothered that this incident could have happened otherwise in an international forum if our dear commandant is sent somewhere to represent us? Let us be more realistic!

  2. I don't think anyone took it too far. I find this all EXTREMELY hilarious and I am SO GLAD that the mockery made them suspend him (though I am sure it is temporary). He actually got off very lightly. Can you imagine if this had happened somewhere like the UK or US? People wouldn't stop at t-shirts and internet memes.

Do we all honestly believe that this man doesn't understand the internet because he is too "old"? I'd bet you cash that he can show you a porn website before he finds you the NSCDC website. People learn what they want to learn. If 80 year old grandparents can navigate the internet and technology then this guy has no excuse whatsoever.

Channels and other journalists are doing their job. I'd rather have them make fun of pure foolishness than go back to the days when "the news" was just a propaganda mouthpiece for the government. Wake up and smell the democracy guys. IF a public official messes up, they should be called out. If they can't perform at a certain level, they shouldn't be in office. I don't know how he got the job, but his oga at the top should probably be fired as well for hiring him.

  3. i for one did not find the video funny at all, i think the reporters were very unprofessional. how on earth do you embarass your guest like that? when they sensed he dint know the answer they should have kept it moving instead of probing further.

yes he came to discuss the website, yes he should have known they website, yes he should have said he dint know it instead of beating round the bush, yes, yes, yes

but did the reporters abi na interviewers take it too far YES

    1. @doll I cannot categorically say if the reporters were unprofessional or not. I will have to ask the oga at the top.

    4. Seriously doll, this is why Nigeria is still very backwards, why would you come for an interview about your company website and not know the said website? for reals lets stop all this, you have people who are more qualified for the job, and can never ever smell the job talk more of getting the job, and u are here saying the reporters went too far. that is the best interview i have seen from nigeria in a long time, lets stop all this self hating and FIX our country.

  4. I totally agree with this article, my mum is totally anti-technology. i find it annoying when she keeps on making my siblings and i change dvds or change channels for her or when she complains that we send my dad whatsapp messages and not her. i however will not make a Tshirt mocking her.
The reporters were cruel, i mean it was rather obvious that the man dint know! they should have moved on. especially the male reporter
I do agree that a simple 'i dont know' could have saved the situation and he dint have to try to lie his way out.
The 'oga at the top' thing was funny at first but haba! it has gone too far!!!

  5. If the subject of the interview was the website, surely he needed to know the website address. It is just plain laziness. Fine, let's assume he isn't technology literate, couldn't the interview have been done by someone else in the department? Perhaps someone who actually knows what a website is. He didn't prepare for the interview, is non chalant about his responsibilities, and he accurately reflects the society we are in.

Just out of curiousity, is "dint" one of those new text abbreviations?

  6. People making excuses for this man forget that people like him are our representatives. My(our) mom(s) not being able to send emails does not justify someone holding such a high position not knowing the website of an organisation he heads! I just wish we could have an uproar like this for important issues too.

  7. There is nothing wrong with admitting your ignorance in a certain matter but there is everything wrong with claiming you know when actually you know nothing. The journalist did their Job and should be compensated for exposing Mr shem to the people of Nigeria

If he were to be before Larry Kings or Steve of BBC hardtalk he would have embarrased further by walking out of the studio. In my opinion, that man should be demoted. There is no excuse for not knowing your organization's website. Absolutely no excuse.

I'm sorry! I feel no iota of pity for Mr Shem. I only feel for his wife and kids. One question i ask myself each time I watch that ”my oga at the top” video is "How did he climb up that ladder?" *Angry face*

It's high time we keep our emotions aside and say no to mediocrity. Yes, no one is above mistake. But such a blunder shouldn't go scot free. #MySoleOpinion

  8. I don't think the reporters were making fun of him; that's crazy. Let's look at this thing objectively: should a man of his position know something as simple and basic as his company's website? Definitely.

However, him not knowing - in my opinion - is a glimpse of the company and Nigeria as a whole. It means, to me, that they do not take their social presence important, that they do not make it a point for their employees to know, and that they do not know the importance of it either.

Needless to say, the man could have just said that he did not know the website, instead of acting that film he did for us.

  9. Amazing minds think alike! I blogged about it too! When I heard about the suspension (still not sure if it is true), I was like...too bad, soo sad. He should be given a break, if you ask me.

  10. Most of those that found it hilarious (like me) are of this current generation. We need to lay off the man. It is not a crime not to know the website of your organization. I can imagine Bush not knowing the website of the white house but of course, Obama would know, the man is a blackberry user. The blame is on the NSCDC for sending the man to be the spokesman and those unprofessional journalists at ChannelsTV. They were disrespectful because trust me, they wouldn't have prodded Fashola or Goodluck like that. If they has simply asked and he couldn't respond, we would have still come to the same conclusion (that he didn't know the website) without the humiliation involved.

  11. The man was very very unrepentant when u watch d video all over again, with d way he was raisn his hand.the channels crew am sure never intend to ridicul him,its just dat in d civil service anytn goes am sure it can't happen in a private organisation.I just pity d wife and kids but for d man he deserve what he got cos he knows why he was coming for the interview. And if u ask me am sure there will be more competent officer in his office that could have come to face the channels crew but becos of bureacracy and hero worshipn of seniority in the civil service he will insist on coming .

  13. My question is who are those Ogas at the top?

    ReplyDelete
  14. I don't know who d Oga at the top is but I will get back 2 u,let me ask my Oga at the top

  15. Even though I wouldn't go viral with the interview, the interview just showed that the govt organizations in this country are taking us for granted. He didnt need to be IT savy to know the website. If you get to that position you need to know alot of things. I am sure the guy has a black berry even an iPad that he doesn't even know how to use. It's the same thing with our graduates you have a marine engr who can't swim or a graduate of biology who can't draw an animal or plant cell. www.secretlilies.blogspot.com

  16. We shouldnt pity this man and we shouldnt blame the channels crew. It all depends on how we look at his "ignorance".., to me i think we should do more that just printing on t-shirts. This is more like not knowing your house address! Its insane. I believe thr wr more cmpitent ppl that would hv gone for this intervw, bt as a proud person, which he is; desided to go and display his "heroism" on tv to his "oga @ d top"....lol

  17. Well, all the same , how about a round of aplause for him.....that was quite a show, very entertaining......i already added it to my "funnies" collection. Guess how i saved d video..."my oga @ d top".. He is certainly a good comedian! If he is dismissed, he can work with AY.....Lol

  19. What this "Oga @ the top" saga shows to us is the fact that ours is still a closed system and no empowerment. The culture is simply being deferential to an "Oga" even in his/her absence but that deference is the least form of its manifestation. At the medium level of its manifestation, it is simply a situation where a political appointee/government official will start answering interviews questions by praising the government of his/Her State/Federal Chief Executive. The manifestation in extreme terms includes but is not limited an example which Prof Pat Utomi made at a Forum in September 2008 at The Eko Hotel where he said that government officials would take turns to say to their boss at a public function: "Your Excellency, that thing which YOU ARE ABOUT TO SAY (Which hasn't been said) IS ABSOLUTELY CORRECT". This is the culture of sycophancy.... Nigeria We hail thee..! But as for Mr. Shem's "Oga @the Top", I like the joke and I'm really gonna revel in it for a while..

  20. My Oga At The Top.....it depicted very well d Nigerian Situation. i am coming my pals, u check bak mins afta letmee ask MY OGA AT D TOP

  21. Using lack of internet when he was small as an excuse is trash. He has a job & in a job, you update with time so that you won't be left behind. Not knowing the address of an org he heads in this age sounds like negligence of duty to me.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Why should anyone blame the reporters? Do you that in Owo LGA of Ondo State some people are in the Legislative Arm of the Govt and they called their 'Constituencies' 'consequecy'? Or another situation where we have Primary School drop outs as Head of Caretakers Committee for LGAs and one of them ran into me late last year he can't even explained his role as a supervisor. So for my Oga Shem with his Ogas at the Top, he deserves what he gets. Journalist, Channels TV and all those who believe in right pegs for right holes, God Speed!

  23. Hi,

I would even say that a Public Relations Officer is paid to grant interviews; such officers would have been in the best position to get it done. Let our boss delegate responsibility.

This is one of the things that makes Politicians have lots of Special Assistant because they are not ready to learn.

    Regards

    ReplyDelete
  24. Hi,

We need to learn to delegate responsibility, the PRO of NSCDC is paid to grant interviews.
Then it also makes it obvious why we have many Special Assistants among the political class in Nigeria
