This real life couple, Jesse Cottle, a retired US Marine, and his wife Kelly Cottle show us again another facet of unconditional love and how much it happens more than we know.
In July 2009, Jesse Cottle stepped on an IED during his tour in southern Afghanistan, which followed two earlier stints in Iraq after he joined the Marines in 2003. Jesse Cottle’s job had him hunting for and detonating explosives. After countless missions, this particularly powerful blast cost him both of his legs.
After his return to the states, it took several surgeries and months of rehabilitation for him to learn to walk with prosthetics. Then came an unexpected blessing. Jesse Cottle learned to walk again after losing both of his legs to an IED in Afghanistan in 2009.
Jesse Cottle, who enjoyed an active lifestyle before the accident, was at a swim meet during his recovery when he was introduced to the woman who would be his wife. As he learned to live a normal life, it was Kelly who stayed by his side. They wed in San Diego. He wore his prosthetics during their first dance.
Jesse Cottle said he wouldn’t take back having stepped on that IED — otherwise he never would have met Kelly.
The picture of her hoisting him on her back is a reminder of the good that came. “I actually look at it very much as a symbol for our whole relationship in general,” Jesse Cottle said. “She’s physically carrying me, but there’s times where she’s carrying me emotionally. It’s a perfect representation of who Kelly is.”
