Domestic Violence and the Enugu State Association Washington DC Metro Area

Domestic Violence is a pattern of behavior used to establish power and control over another person through fear and intimidation, often including the threat or use of violence. According to some Nomore.org, some signs of an abusive relationship include:


Exerting strict control (financial, social and/or appearance).
Needing constant contact including excessive texts and calls.
Insulting a partner in front of other people.
Extreme jealousy.
Showing fear around a partner.
Isolation from family and friends.
Frequent canceling of plans at the last minute.
Unexplained injuries or explanations that don’t quite add up.

The next time you’re in a room with 6 people, think about this:
1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men experience violence from their partners in their lifetimes.
1 in 3 teens experience sexual or physical abuse or threats from a boyfriend or girlfriend in one year.
1 in 5 women are survivors of rape.
1 in 2 women and 1 in 5 men have experienced some form of sexual violence in their lives.
1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men were sexually abused before the age of 18.

The Enugu State Association (E.S.A) Washington DC Metropolitan Area is a non-profit organization formed in 1994. The purpose of forming the Association was to promote the social, cultural, educational, civic, and general well-being of our members in particular, and Enugu State indigenes based in the United States, specifically in the Washington DC metropolitan area.

This year's Enugu State Association WDC fundraising event (Enugu Day) is focused on raising domestic violence awareness in the Nigerian and African community in the Diaspora but more specifically in Enugu State, Nigeria.

The funds raised will go towards providing support, resources and financial aid to a Women's Shelter for Domestic Violence, currently located in Enugu, Enugu State Nigeria.

The Association will be working directly with Women’s Aid Collective (WACOL), an Enugu-based independent, non-political, non-governmental and non-profit organization whose mission is to promote a democratic society free from violence and abuse, where all human rights, ( in particular, women and children) are recognized in law and practice. WACOL, manages and oversees the Women's shelter for Domestic Violence in Enugu City, Enugu State.

Dr. Joy Ngozi Ezeilo, OON [Ph.D. (Nig.), LLM (London), LL.B. (Nig.), BL, Diploma Peace & Conflict Resolution (Uppsala)], is the founding director of Women Aid Collective (WACOL). Dr. Ezeilo is an activist and versatile legal scholar recognized as a leading authority in the field of human rights, especially on the rights of women and children. She was appointed in 2008 as the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Trafficking in Persons, especially women and children, and currently serves in that capacity globally.
