Was I The Only One Who Read Flowers in The Attic by VC Andrews in Nigeria?

Posted in: , ,

Flowers in the Attic is a horror story, of children locked up in the attic after their father's death by their weak mother and wicked grandmother, and gradually poisoned so the women could inherit a massive fortune. The book is by VC Andrews, and comes as a series, I read three of them as a teenager, Petals in the Wind and  If There Be Thorns.

Known as the Dollanganger Series, the books tackle very heavy subjects including incest, family ties, love, hatred, bitterness, death, forgiveness, revenge, etc. They were so well writeen and gripping, and the author remains among those I will never forget.

I now hear there was a 1987 movie and Lifetime just had  remake. Did anyone ever see the movies or read the books?

    1. The books were quite good, though the subject matter was heavy for the age at which I read it.

  3. Wow, I remember these books! Back in the day, it was contraband in my secondary school, and passed around only to the initiated, hehehe...

  4. I read all three as a preteen and was left horrified. Don't even want to see the movie now.

    1. As a preteen, definitely too disturbing for that age.

  5. I read the first and second and then stopped. It appeared like the author was promoting incest

    1. I didn't see it like that, more like what extreme situations and wickedness can lead to. But it's indeed a disturbing theme.

  7. I did as well, I read Flowers in the attic, petals in the wind, If there be thorns and Garden of shadows.calso saw the movie, the old one. The movie was great but as usual not better than the book.most movies made out of books aren't as detailed as they slash a lot off plus there are so many things revealed in the books that weren't in the movie.

    1. You're right, many movies never leave up to the book.

  8. Myne, I read it, and like you said, 'horrific'. *shudders* I will never read it a second time, and that's me who like to revisit old movies and books! Never going to go near the movie, which I never knew about, thank God!

  10. Myne you weren't the only one. I agree with NIL, I found that and VC Andrew's other books disturbing. And I have no interest in watching the movie either.

  13. Count me in too. I read that series as a preteen as well, and was addicted event hough it made me depressed so read the other series like "dawn" and "heaven" etc and the themes of evil and horrific crimes to pre teen children continued. I was guaranteed to cry in every series i tried...lol. will not be seeing the movies..too depressing for me.

  14. I read the 3 books. They were quite different from the 'run of the mill books' that people of my age then were exposed to.

  15. I read all three, I am pretty sure I have them still. Very disturbing themes but then I discovered that all of VC Andrews books have an undertone of incest. I never knew there was a movie.

  18. I read them as a preteen. I will not mind reading them again. I was a novel addict then. The addiction has now moved on to internet. Can't help myself oh!

  20. I read the book when I was 13. Stopped with the 2nd part. Just couldn't continue. Was too horrific for me. The movie showed on Lifetime last weekend, but I couldn't bring myself to watch it.

  21. I read almost every VC Andrew book published till I was in my early 20's. Then they became too predictable and I moved on. Yes, the stories were disturbing but I liked them for their sobering reality factor. Life isn't a bed of roses...Sometimes, there are flowers suffocating in a dusty old attic.

  22. I read them too as a teenager and I don't think I'd read them again or watch the movie... Too disturbing! And like some people have said, it kinda 'normalises' incest

  23. Have you ever considered about including a little bit more than just your articles?
I mean, what you say is valuable and all. Nevertheless think about if you added some great pictures or video clips to give your posts
more, "pop"! Your content is excellent but with pics and videos, this website could definitely be one of the very best in its
    niche. Fantastic blog!

  24. Read all three books as a teen and just a few years ago read the prequel novel Garden of Shadows which tells the grandmother's story. Really loved those novels with their dark themes. The first couple years of V.C. Andrews books are really good but they eventually become watered down and repetitive as the ghostwriter starts writing multiple books a year to turn a profit. Yup only a few of the earliest books including Flowers in the Attic is actually by V.C. Andrews herself.
