Pastor Enoch Adeboye, General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, was speaking at the president’s daughter’s wedding over the weekend when he said that marriages contracted on social media may not last. He said in the sermon;
“If you marry the modern way like on Facebook, you may likely divorce the modern way. Marry traditionally and involve God.”
Do you agree with him, and have you seen any examples of couples who broke up quickly after getting married following initial meeting on social media? And who says meeting on Facebook does not involve God?
I do like that he did not go with the majority of those who heap the success or failure of a marriage on the woman's shoulders. Pastor Adeboye said that responsiblity rests on the husband who is the head of the family. So his advice at the wedding was to the groom to ensure that the marriage succeeds. He urged all husbands not to criticise their wives but correct her in love :)
Involving God in your Marriage is vital. I can't say for sure whether where the couple meets determine the longevity of their marriage.
ReplyDeletePsstor Adeboye must encounter varied marital cases on a daily basis, so I presume he is speaking from experience.
I think it's important to not miss out the words he used in that statement "If you marry the modern way like on Facebook, you MAY LIKELY divorce the modern way"... It would be interesting to hear the full text of the message and understand the context in which he says it.
ReplyDeleteBecause in the same vein, if you marry the traditional way, you may likely divorce the traditional way too..
Personally, I don't think he was stating that everyone who met and married via social media would end up divorced. I listened to a message where he spoke about something similar and he was talking about the process of entering into a long-term commitment without getting proper information about the person you are about to get married to.. Like, don't base your married life on information gleaned about the person on social media - we know how misleading that can be..
