An man Johnny Lee Banks Jr. and his wife, Zelda Banks, have filed a lawsuit Tuesday suing an Alabama hospital, doctors and others for medical malpractice.
The lawsuit says Banks went to Princeton Baptist Medical Center in Birmingham, Alabama, last month for a routine circumcision. It alleges the man's penis was gone when he awoke after the surgery.
The suit names two doctors and Princeton Baptist Medical Center, a urology group, and a medical clinic as defendants and is seeking an unspecified dollar amount.
A hospital spokeswoman says the claims lack merit..
The lawsuit claims:
"When the plaintiff ... awoke from his aforesaid surgical procedure, his penis was amputated.
The plaintiffs claim before the procedure was carried out in June they "never gave consent for the complete or partial amputation of (his) penis."
The lawsuit adds that the man was never provided with an explanation as to the medical necessity of an amputation, nor was warned the circumcision procedure could result in an amputation.
As a result of the allegedly botched surgery, the man says he has suffered unnecessary pain and spent additional time in hospital recovering.
The man's wife is also claiming she has suffered financially because of her husband's injuries.
