In disclosing that Nigeria received an experimental drug called Nano Silver on Thursday, the Minister of Health, Onyebuchi Chukwu said it came from a Nigerian scientist, but refused to give a name.
This should be good news, that there is now a drug to try to treat the eight Nigerians who have tested positive for Ebola, but the Minister not giving the name of the Nigerian researcher in the Diaspora who offered the Nano Silver drug made me ask, why the secrecy?
It is instructive to note that soon after the Nigerian announcement, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration began to warn of products that fraudulently claim to prevent or treat Ebola.
Erica Jefferson, a spokeswoman for the FDA, said she could not provide any information about the product referenced by the Nigerians.
Also, receiving an email reply from Dr Rima Laibow [read here], one of the proponents of Nano Silver for Ebola, has made it even more imperative that we ask questions of our government officials. She says;
Let me be frank. I have serious concerns which I a sharing here with you about the sudden appearance of a Nano Silver "drug". First of all, Nano Silver is a nutrient not a drug. Nano silver is also not a vaccine.
This is surely a concern, and one I think the Nigerian government ought to take seriously.
Though the WHO has opened the ethics door to the use of new untested treatment to the fight Ebola, we should be careful not to mess up the clinical trials or introduce harmful agents to sick people whose health has already been compromised by the virus. The WSJ writes;
"A Nigerian contagious-disease expert, Dr. Simon Agwale, said Nano Silver had proven effective against viruses, bacteria, and parasites. "It may be also a source of a cure" for Ebola patients, Dr. Agwale said."
But though the Nigerian authorities are right to be hopeful, they must also be wise so as not to be duped and put the lives of innocent people in danger.
The Minister said to the press that details of the Nano Silver drug delivered to Nigeria will be disclosed later. These are the questions that I want him to answer.
1. Where did it came from?
2. What is the dilution?
3. What is it actually?
4. What is the protocol?
5. What is the protocol based on?
6. What is the science behind the protocol?
7. Who is the Nigerian scientist behind this Nano Silver?
Dr. Rima Laibow continues in her email;
The announcement today that nano silver will be brought to Nigeria by a doctor who "discovered" it and will patent it is very troubling.
Despite the fact that our organization and I have been very public about the use of Nano Silver for Ebola, this doctor has not contacted me about this use (which is OK - perhaps he knows more than I do) and, much more concerning, has not secured his Nano Silver from the only manufacturer who has made a nano solution which has been shown in rigorous studies to inactivate the Ebola virus.
I know because that is the manufacture who makes the Nano Silver 10 PPM that our organization offers and is the precise solution which was used in the research referenced above which is, as far as I know, the only such research that has ever been conducted and published.
Other Nano Silvers MIGHT work against the Ebola virus or they might not.
So while not completely ruling out this Nano Silver sourced by the Nigerian government, we need to ensure everything is done in an open and honest manner to secure the best results for the Ebola patients.
Please share this to all journalists you know and to the Minister of health if possible.
Good work Myne, I'm waiting for the press conference by the Minister.
