If you’re looking to make it big, whether that be through music, acting, modeling, or the like, you’re probably someone with huge dreams, intense motivation, and a true passion for what you do. Before you break into the entertainment industry, here are a few things you need to know to succeed.
Connections
People often say, “it’s not what you know, it’s who you know.” This is particularly true in the entertainment industry. Getting ahead in your career is often about networking and having the right connections. This doesn’t mean you can jump right to rubbing elbows with the elite in the industry, nor should you. One of the most helpful things when entering your career in this industry is just talking to those who were recently in the same position as you, and discussing how they were able to get ahead.
Education
Okay, it’s also about “what you know” as much as it is about “who you know.” The entertainment industry is often changing and it’s important to stay abreast of what’s happening. Education is important to the industry, and that doesn’t just mean formal education like going to college. While it’s great to have an expansive resume, what will make you stand out is your understanding of various elements of the field - branding yourself, marketing what you do, understanding the business world, and showing your creative side will all get you ahead in your career.
Jobs
When people look for talent for hire, they are not always looking for the next star of a blockbuster movie or the latest pop singer. To make a lucrative career out of entertainment, you may need to work smaller gigs. That includes performing at parties and corporate events, or doing small acting roles before moving to the big screen. Being available for these smaller jobs helps get your name and image out there to the public, and will teach you a lot about how the industry works on a smaller scale.
Rejection
It’s okay to be rejected - it happens to the best of us. Even the best actors are turned down for roles, whether it be their big break or after they’re already respected in the profession. Part of life is dealing with the let-down, and then coming out the other side stronger. In the entertainment industry, you may face rejection often, but the important thing is to use it as fuel to work even harder and be even better. Use criticism as a way to grow as an entertainer, and never take it personally, and you’ll become better and better. It may just not be your time yet, but you’ll have your moment to shine.
Confidence
The most important part of being in this industry is believing in yourself, even when it feels like no one else does. There will be times that you struggle and are not on the right path, but with hard work and dedication, you’ll achieve your goals. In the entertainment industry especially, you’ll need to work extremely hard to reach the top, and you won’t do that by second guessing yourself. Know that you’re here for a reason, and your ability to spread love, to make people smile, and to use your creativity to improve the world is the reason to keep pushing forward.
