Who should be taller - The Man or the Woman

Posted in: , , ,
Of course I know there are no shoulds here. We are all born with our different heights and our hearts will find love where they will. But let's just discuss this in a spirit of fun and no offense to anyone. Most women want a guy who is taller than them, and the reverse is the case for men, they want petite women, at least compared to them.

The Yoruba I hear, as part of traditional engagement, have the man showing he can carry or lift his fiancee. A friend of ours, male, says that in a couple, the woman should not be seen when she hides behind the man. Interesting way to think about it, I guess. I've heard some tall girls bemoan the fact that they only seem to attract shorter men. Some of them accept it and the men gladly, what is height anyway? Others hold out for their dream of a guy they can look up to, or who they can comfortably rest their head on his shoulders.

If you're a petite woman like me or Jada Smith, you may not have that problem. I am 5'1 and though he's no six footer, Atala is about 9 inches taller. I once dismissed all men of average height and dated a basketball player, not sure of his exact height but definitely more than 6 feet. Even I had to run after a while, not to talk of funny asides from people. Khloe Kardashian is tall but you can see how her basketballer puts her in the shade.

But what of the other side of the story? When the woman is either a lot taller than the man, or becomes taller whenever she puts on any type of heels. Are you of the opinion that such tall ladies should always be in flats? Do you know of any couples like that? Are you in one of such?

I'll end this with a joke I heard when I was much younger. My dad said a friend of his, who was on the shortish side, swore after an insult about his height that he would marry a towering woman. He did get his heart's desire, and after that he said his nickname was now Tallest. He said "E kpom Tallest, n kporo gi nwunyem" meaning, call me tallest and I'll call out my wife. :)

  1. lmao at the joke hehe.

I'm personally tall and Lord knows the thing you said about attracting short men is very very true... BUT! thou shalt not settle o...lol jk

But honestly, I'm in no way attracted to guys who are shorter than me. Fortunately for me, God created a lot of tall ones in my generation so there are at least options but unfortunately, all the tall guys seem to be really into the four feet girls. Sha sha God will help us! lol

  2. Well for me at 5 ft 2.75 inches, finding a man taller than me was very easy :) I do tend to like it when the man is taller though.

    1. Yeah, we petite ones definitely have a wider pool. I've rarely seen men shorter than I am even..

  3. Being on the taller side it can be hard finding men taller, and it's certainly a struggle to accept the shorter height. It makes me personally feel a bit silly and like I'm too shallow when I care too much though! (Not that others shouldn't care, I think we all have to set our own standards and I want to try caring about other things. I'll take short over mean, for example. hah)

  4. My mom is taller than my dad. I used to be a bit embarrassed by it when I was a child.

  6. Love your dad's sense of humor! I think, if love is in the heart, height differences don't matter.

  7. Therez no hard &fast rule on whu should be taller ...But for me,being on the petite team,i'l like a man that's taller..lol.

  9. I prefer tall guys probably cos I'm not tall.

  10. I am considered tall....5'11 without heels and boy, do I love my heels. I have to confess that it was quite hard finding men taller than me while I was in the game (The Hubster is the only guy taller than me that I've been with). If the couple feels comfy doing this, go on bare but in 9ja society, you know the jokes will flow like water!

  11. I am a victim of the tall fantasy. I pray it doesn't blind me to greater qualities.

  12. LOL...LOL @ the joke.
I think it's pretty much a matter of preference. I like it when the guy is taller though, that way he looks more like the Protector than the protected. lol.

  13. I'm 5'5 and I'd definitely prefer a guy who's taller than me. But if we are of the same (or close) height I'd mostly not wear heels when we go out together. Shouldn't be hard cos I don't like heels anyway :-)

  14. He should be o! I love my heels :)
On a more serious note though, I think if I was tall myself I wouldn't really mind, but I feel like I owe this to my children so they can at least have a chance to be tall or average.

It does feel awkward to see an extremely tall girl with a short guy tho and I always wish that all the tall guys would also choose the tall girls so the girls can have a chance at someone that is more compatible. For those that aren't tall(like me), it's almost like a cheat cos we have more options.
We already have a ratio of more girls than boys, then add less tall boys to that for the tall ones, it's not funny.
Like when I see Jada and Will kinda, I literally go like "1 tall girl just missed out"

LOL Don't mind me, the most important thing is love, you never know where you'd find it.

  15. I'm 5'10" and always felt more natural with men who are taller than me (my husband is 6'1"). And for some reason, I don't really like tall women in heels (and I haven't owned a pair in many, many years).

  17. Wow! I am about 5.5 or exactly that. And I want a girl that's somehow shorter than I am. I want to just like someone said already make her feel protected. That's why I always ask my girl about her height on the phone lol and she always argues that she's taller, she's not taller thou.

  18. I guess most people tend to think the woman should be shorter, but I really liked the celeb pictures you showed. There are lots more, too. I am about two inches taller than my husband. Although I am not overly tall at 5'6", he comes from a very short family and is the tallest of all his sibling at 5'4"! For years I only wore flat shoes, but i have finally decided I don't care and I wear heels if I want to. he doesn't mind - in fact I think he feels proud. his brother always says if he had let his height bother him he would have been dead long ago.

  19. I am the smallest in my house. So long ago i had made up my mind that i was going to be attracted to only tall guys. Anyways my husband is a lot taller than me and I love it.

  21. Choi!!!! Sore spot for me o!
I have always liked my men taller. My ex was several inches taller than my not-so-meagre 5"75 self. BUT, the current one (who may be the lucky one) is maybe even an inch shorter or my height exactly. I am sure that I can't deal with being conspicuously the taller one though.
For the most part, I havent had to wear heels when with me but I dont think it should be that much of a problem.....I really really wish he was a few inches taller sha.....

  22. I definitely prefer taller guys, but one of the nicest guys I was ever involved with was way shorter than me (3 inches or more, I think). Coupled with the fact that I wore 4 inch heels on a dressy day, and we have somewhat of an issue. He's into fashion though, and the short guys in that industry tend to like the modelesque girls (i.e lanky, taller girls... I'm only 5'7" though).

  23. Well, me I'm just 5ft 3and I definitely prefer the guy taller. I'll feel protected with him and would be very happy if he can carry me....but all that is not what matters anyways.Love's what matters.

Will and Jada look so cute together :)

  24. i prefer a taller guy, my boo is way way taller than i am and our combo is always sexy.

But really in the end, its love that matters.

  25. I guess on first impulse i'd go for the obvious but i it's really not by these things you no. not a guarantee of happiness so i guess beauty or in this case height, lies in the eyes of the beholder. I support your dad's friend there lol!

    P.S
I'd like feedback about my blog- content, look and layout and suggestions as well. Been doing a little spring cleaning and would like to get some feedback. Thanks

  26. I'm six foot tall, and attracting shorter men is the bane of my life - sooo frustrating.
My friends tell me I'm being too picky by looking for a tall man, but I can't help it.

  27. lol @ the joke. I am short, so a shorter man is a no no for me. I do not want an iroko tree but at least when I wear heels, I should not be taller than him.

  28. This is quite interesting. As someone who really doesn't have a preference for either tall or short guys, I find people's choices amusing. What's funnier is the fact that there are sentiments attached to whatever choices people make. I have a Korean guy friend who always said he'd never go for fat women. I was shocked at how narrow minded he sounded but he meant every word he said. It was culturally frowned upon for a woman to be on the big side because it signifies laziness?? At the end of the day he fell in love with a lady bigger than his two sisters combined. His reason? She could reach into his soul in ways no other human can...and she can lose weight if she wants to. I just Lol'ed. Seriously, lol! I find all these check lists annoying. If you get your tall man, it's because God already made it so. So hon, you're just lucky :)

  29. In my mind, the guy, but I suppose it really doesnt matter-love does.

  30. It doesn't matter because the heart is like a tree it grows where it wants. Personally I don't have a problem with a woman taller than me.

  31. The guy definitely should be taller
    - or at least same height....although, if God has an awesome short man lined up for you, don't reject him because of his height! I'm also tall 5'11 and I have to say it was a silent prayer point of mine that my husband be taller than me - thankfully the Lord heard answered!

  32. I got over a Woman being taller than me real quick. She ain't getting no shorter and I ain't getting no taller so let's have some fun! And I've had alot of fun. 8-)

  36. No matter how much of an equalist I am (alternatively read: pretend to be), I doubt I'd go out with someone even just an inch shorter than me because of those evil shoes called high heels. :-D

Yes, I'd prefer to be the taller one, and by a wide margin.

  37. Looool i really prefer taller guys as I'm short myself. Like Ms. JB said I feel like I owe my children, lol.
It's funny how if my friend goes "do u like mr. somebody" I'd go like abeg he's short nd dats supposed to be the end of discussion.
But on a serious note, if a guy is shorter than me I cannot take him serious ohhh

  38. i'm 5.65 and i so love tall guys. fortunately my man is my height and has everything i ever wanted and asked for except that he is not taller than me, it actually took me 1 year to finally accept him and come to terms with it. I remember a friend warned me to stop looking up that what i'm looking for is not tall but by my side, lol!
I don't wear heels when we are together. My dear all the tall guys i met had not even 10% of what i wanted, and since i started dating my man i have had no regrets even though i sometimes wish he was taller cos i love heels.
he really has all i need to forget about the height.

  39. well my boo is shorter than i am and i almost did not date him for that fact! Took me a whole two months to get over his height issue it doens't seem to bother him coz the men where he comes from are fairly short and tall girl short boy couples are not unusual there. Thank God common sense ruled the day and i saw him for the good man that he is..........too bad i can never wear heels with him i would feel too uncomfortable but i have invested in a couple of dressy flats and one inch heels lol

  41. A friend of mine is about 5'11' married to a guy who is 5'3'. She rocks heels etc cause her husband loves her in them. The guy doesnt even try to hide it, he walks by her proudly and she is very comfortable with him. No unnecessary bending or stooping. Choosing a tall bride was a scientific decision for him. He said he comes from a short lineage and wanted his own kids to be tall....my Reproduction lecturer in Uni woulda loved him. he preached that to us all the time 'there are enough short pople in the world, don't contribute to the birth of more' lol.

Personally I am ambivalent. Not Aki shaa

  42. I am 5 foot 11 inches and considered short in my family. My younger brothers and sisters are all growing taller than me as well as everyone else in my family and yes, I come from a family whom have a big build thanks to the Tongan blood in me. I was always the tallest amongst my group of friends and everytime I had a boyfriend they either just made my height or taller. I always wanted a taller husband but I'm not marrying a man who just goes passed my shoulders (no heels on). My family laugh at me everyday but I guess you never know what man God sets for you. I must say though, he has the best personality out of all the previous boyfriends I've had and he has a heart of gold. I never let the height difference get to me though and walk with him with confidence. He says he is proud walking with me, it makes him feel like he's with a model. Hehe, I guess we all have different opinions though...
