Solomon Akiyesi and Bigamy in Nigeria

Posted in: ,
Solomon and Lilian Akiyesi (First wedding)
I know polygamy is part of the traditional culture in the south, and part of the religious culture in the north of Nigeria, but I thought Bigamy was a crime? So some men who married their first wives by customary marriage could go ahead to take another woman to a court or church for a legally registered marriage, or vice versa. But trying to marry two women through the church sounds a bit risky.

As reported by Linda Ikeji, here and here, Solomon Akiyesi, a Nollywood actor planned to marry a new wife without a divorce from his first wife. The party was cut short when the first wife interrupted the wedding proceedings. Some reports say the marriage will go on after the pandemonium calms down. What did he tell everyone, I wonder? Seperation is not divorce, and I doubt the estranged wife excuse if she's pregnant for the man.  What was the pastor of this church thinking, and even now or was it all a money thing?

Can you see how the would-be bigamist was sweating in one of the pictures like he knew he was doing something fishy?

The Bigamous man and his second wife-to-be (Second wedding with no divorce)

I pity the two women most, both heavily pregnant and being put through this kind of stress by a thoughtless philanderer. Nigerian women, please beware of such men. IMO, he should be cooling his legs in a police jail pending bigamy charges.

  2. Over at Linda Ikeji's blog she said the wedding was cancelled; apparently she had sent someone at the wedding.

  3. You know, its no new thing for married men to have kids outside the home (not that I'm in support of that). But it's so frightening to imagine that he could be so callous as to go ahead and even try to wed the other lady(and in church too!). It just makes me wonder what else he is capable of. The wife should be very scared for her life!

  4. What I do not understand is how the mistress never asked to see divorce documents (if that is what he told her) and verify them because I am sure she knew he was married. There is no way you will be dating a Nollywood actor like him and not have some background info on him a simple google search I am sure would probably have given her an inkling into his marital status. This is one slimy man may he get the punishment he deserves!

  5. And some Nigerian bloggers are referring to the wife as "estranged"! Do they even know the meaning of that word so she is estranged and she is carrying belle and he sent her money the Friday before the wedding and told her he was shooting a movie in Lagos and would be home the next week? I tire!
