The head of the public relations unit of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, have released a statement saying that a 400-level engineering student, Miss Oyinlola Rotimi, did not attempt to flush her newborn baby boy down the toilet at Moremi Hall on Wednesday as reported by several blogs.
The situation with Oyinlola's baby supposedly gathered a huge crowd that day when it appeared that she had wanted to get rid of the baby. In his statement however, Mr Abiodun Olanrewaju, said Rotimi did not attempt to kill her baby, but had actually sought help to rescue the baby from the water closet of the toilet after an unplanned delivery. The statement read,
“The truth of the matter is that, there was a delivery of a baby boy by an inexperienced mother who, in her naivety, thought she was pressed by call of nature while she was actually in labour pains.
“Prior to the appearance of the baby, the young, inexperienced mother had discovered that she was bleeding and went to the toilet only to observe that something expelled into the water closet.
“It was at that juncture that she screamed and shouted for help when her friend, Miss Satope Oladayo, heard her voice and traced her to the toilet from their room. It was when Satope entered the toilet and found the baby that she (Satope) called an elderly cleaner for assistance because the two of them were novices in childbearing.
“As of now, Rotimi’s mother is with her and she has started breastfeeding her baby.
“Upon interaction, in the presence of the Matron, Mrs. M.G. Oyedele, Oyin stated that prior to the delivery, she was passing stool and had visited toilet several times but the last time she went around 7am, she could not describe how she was feeling.”
Most women have very pronounced labor, some lasting up to two days. Other women have very short ones. And also as our period pains differ, so maybe also does labor pains differ in various women. And then there is how much a particular woman is able to bear pain. So I would like to give this young lady the benefit of the doubt.
It's great that she and the baby are doing well. It is not a crime as far as I know to be unmarried and pregnant in university in Nigeria, and she also knows the father of her baby. I hope she is able to finish her studies after this incident.
I'm glad to read this. The other day, a lady went to the hospital because she had pains. She thought it was because of the marathon she had just completed but it turned out it was a baby. Surprise surprise especially as this woman had two babies already. She absolutely did not know she was pregnant.

That's a huge lie! I'm a student of Obafemi Awolowo University and what the PRO said is not true! She was running away when the cleaners heard a baby crying in the toilet and that was how she was caught!
