So Okwudili Umenyiora, shown above in his mugshot, has been pointed to by those who allege to know as the owner of a very expensive private house located in Lekki and which pictures have been trending in the Nigerian blogosphere for the past few days. No one is sure how the pictures came online or whether in fact Okwudili is really the owner, but it seems some bloggers have taken time to do some background research on this guy.
As alleged by OMG Nigeria, Okwudili Umenyiora is listed by the Baldwin County, Alabama Corrections Center database, "as being that of a ‘Fugitive From Justice’ and on trial in Alabama for for running a big time check fraud operation, in which they used Nigeria’s name as part of the pitch for their scam."

On the one hand, I'm happy some of us bloggers, like OMG and here, are thinking like journalists, but at the same time, I'm wondering at the timing of this news and how quickly everything unfolded. Could this be a set-up? Could some of his detractors be sending out all this news?
Even if it is true that Okwudili Umenyiora was a criminal in the past, hasn't he paid his dues by going to prison? Should a man's past be forever held against him? Where is the proof that the house belongs to Okwudili Umenyiora or that he built it with money made from credit card scams? Please let's be careful how fast we are to sling mud on ex-convicts.
Exactly what I was saying, someone who left the prison since 2006 still be taunted by his past its quite ridiculous. Since, he is no longer into fraud but doing his legitimate business why the hullabaloo...

i am not being a hater o,but something caught my eye in the write up "Fugitive from justice" from my rudimentary understanding of American criminal terms,i believe this means he is actually on the run and will be arrested on sight.
ReplyDeleteif this is true then while i dont support the unnecessary hype of such individual i think this might be the work of those trying to out him.what law enforcements in the USA,UK hate more than anything is seeing a fugitive from justice living it up its like thumbing his noses at them.
According to people in the know the man is a fugitive that is why he hasn't been able to go back to the US since he left because he fears arrest. If you seriously believe that the house if it belongs to him was built by proceeds from car sales then you guys will believe anything. The point here is not that he has paid his dues and should be forgiven by society if indeed he is not a fugitive no it is the glorifying of 419 and other such crimes by the lavish show of wealth that is being displayed by such people which in turn will lead other young people desperate to get out of poverty down the same road a never ending cycle. One will say Dilly did it went to prison was released and now has this house and business so its ok I too will do 419 even if I get caught serve only a few years in prison and I will be out and the smart ones invest their cash in other people's name which is most likely the case here hence their assets cannot be seized so they come out of prison and move on with life using dirty money and here are youngins hailing their dirty money and looking up to them.
ReplyDeleteHe is part of the reasons why carrying our green passport leaves a sour taste in one's mouth because of the disdainful way we are treated by people from other countries, even our fellow African brothers and sisters. In fact, he should be painted with a tar brush. After acquiring wealth through dubious ways, he is lavishing and displaying it in a vulgar way.
ReplyDeleteIt is high time we show such people that enough is enough. What sort of example are we showing to our children? He should be used as a reference for someone who our children should never emulate or aspire to be like.
The funny thing was that people were tapping into this criminal's blessing, it's better they know what he did to get the money.

DeleteDo I support fraud, in Nigeria or elsewhere, by Nigerians or otherwise? NO, and that is why I called out RMD. I did not sling mud on him, just did not want him in a list I was making to celebrate men I consider motivational.
As for Okwudili Umenyiora, I'll be the last to celebrate him. The header image is his mugshot and there are no pictures of the said house or his cars or his outings at celebrity events.
Now does the house belong to Okwudili Umenyiora and did he build it off proceeds from credit card fraud? I have no comment as I do not know the truth of the matter, and that is where I advise on caution.
Thanks to resourceful bloggers like you and OMG, many people now know he is an ex-con. But does being an ex-con automatically make one a criminal for life? Let each of us decide that for ourselves.

DeleteNigerians are generally very hateful and envious people towards their own. The man first of all did time in the US, yes for his indiscretions, but didn't the bigger thieves in Nigeria push almost everybody who can't steal here to go teal elsewhere? If we where to start enforcing the laws in our books, then almost all Nigerians would be in prison. Everyday, we get away with murder here for the same things people in US will be doing serious time for. Mr dilly did his time, came back, switched his game, and became more successful than most of the hateful idiots in Nigeria. There is nothing extraordinary out the house, it's just a variation of style and Nigerians lack style.

Hope they can work through this storm. I don't support fraud but i don't think someone's past should be used against them; that's if he's stopped. Dude is Rich!
