Rape is No Joke - Basketmouth Offers Weak Apology For Sexist Rape Tweet

Posted in: , ,

I've written a lot about rape on this blog, it is one of the subjects that riles me up no end with male patriarchy, the rape culture that means that most men, and a lot of women too, see nothing wrong with rape, blaming rape victims, making jokes about rape, and actually advocating rape! Which is what Basketmouth basically did in the tweet below! What is wrong with some people?

Thank God some people called him out and he has now apologized as you can see above. I still feel the apology comes from a very shallow place. Baskemouth needs to be educated that women are human beings just like him, and not just because he has a mother, daughter and wife. His "Money choppers" indeed. SMH. This is one person that'll certainly not be paying to see him any time soon, if ever!

  1. Oh well, what else do you want him to do? Surely he cannot castrate himself to show remorse. He has apologized, shallow as it might seem I'm sure he has learnt his lesson.
Basket Mouth is not alone. Most men do not understand the magnitude of rape. Yesterday someone put this on his FB and I called him out, but you would be amazed at how so many guys thought this excuse for a joke was very hilarious.
Just last week alone THREE men I have very high regards for told me, at different times, that when a girl says No she hardly ever means No. I'm getting so sick and tired of hearing this.

  2. That joke was so unecessary. Worst part is, it's not even funny no matter how much I try to see the 'joke in it

  3. Now that his endorsement deal is being threatened he gives a half baked apology. Pride goes before a fall.

  4. Please move the hell on, we all have sisters, female friends, etc and will kill whoever try to rape them!
Mistakes happen, Basketmouth apologized! I mean the deed is already done, how deep do you want his apology to be? He should kill himself before you accept what he offered?? What will happen if you were God, you will kill us all in an instant! God forgive you..

WTH, the need to be politically correct will ruin this world. Go look for better stories for your readers.

    1. It's very unfortunate that you appear to be narrow-minded from your comment.. Have you been a victim of rape? Do you have someone close to you who has? I bet you would not water it down to being 'politically-correct'.. I feel his apology was not sufficient enough either. Basketmouth is a public figure and therefore has huge influence.. He should have been clearer in his stand against rape or at least get someone to advise him properly before issuing an apology..

  5. If you were really confident about this comment, u should hve come out of your anonymous comment to post it. Truth is, basket mouth can never over-apologise for this rather tasteless joke. He lost a fan in me the minute I read it. Rape isn't something that shld be joked about...and if u have ever been raped, u wld understand...Nigerian men should be educated about dating- taking a woman out and buying her gifts shldnt be abt getting sex in return, buy her gifts cos u want to, and if she's inclined to going to bed with you, fine. If not, move on. Please please please, let's show sensitivity to certain issues. Thanks

  6. Maybe he should kill himself to convince you he's truly sorry. While I do not agree with his joke, but for goodness sake, if someone makes a mistake and says he's sorry, the reasonable thing to do will be to let it pass and move on.

  7. I find it really sad that you and many others think that there's actually a joke in what he said. There are a million ways he could have put it, without writing the words RAPE in capital letters followed by exclamation marks. Because from where I stand, it comes off almost as an encouragement and that's awful. There are many other jokes he could have told, and being the king of comedy, I'm shocked to my bones he let this one slip. He thought about it and actually typed it to be viewed by the whole world.

Rape is a VERY sensitive issue. And this is 2014. We need to stop condoning important issues being made light of because it's downright distasteful and doesn't help alleviate them in any way. Maybe as Nigerians our eyes haven't been fully opened to this SCOURGE, because as a Nation we are very good at sweeping issues under the rug and being self-righteous but I want to believe that he has fans all over the continent in South Africa, Kenya and other parts of the world in India and other areas that have been ravaged by "rape culture". These countries I have mentioned are to far. Let's look at the DRC just right here.

I have been looking at this for almost three hours, trying to find the "joke" but my face is as straight as those yellow wooden rulers we grew up with.

He has apologized, yes, but sometimes sorry doesn't cut it. And in issues like this, it never will. It's like that case of Justine Sacco or so saying she's going to Africa and hopes she doesn't catch AIDS. WTF really? Even if she thought about it and it was awfully hilarious to her in ways I will never understand to her, the world still hasn't forgiven her.

He has a wife and daughter and a mother, yes but he doesn't understand that it's not just about those he holds dear, it's about people who have no one to protect them, to "kill" whoever it is that tries to rape them as you so foolishly put it. It's about women raped in their own homes by friends and acquaintances, does he know how it feels to be overpowered despite your cries of No?. Well maybe he will say that No means Yes. I'm sick of him and his fucking stupidity and the main point of all this is that he should have know better and this "joke" should NEVER have seen the light of day. Surely not by him. Or by anyone else. Next time he should lock up that basket of his and keep it that way. Let him be an example to others.

  9. Man the fact that you have a basket mouth does not mean you allow anything, just anythng to leak out of it. Fame does not guarantee a man in the place of justice over ignorant. I hv been raped before and I bet you, I will always give you a badmouth no matter ur apolody...
