Book Review - Drowning by Jassy de Jong

Posted in: , ,

When the publishers of Drowning by Jassy de Jong sent me a request to review this book, what first got my attention in the synopsis was that it was set in South Africa, and it was romance/erotica with a love triangle. It's been a while since I read a really good romance - no I did not read the Shades of Grey novels - and I wanted to see what I was missing.

Synopsis

Sensuous but stifled New York City photographer Erin Mitchell thinks going to South Africa on assignment will be the perfect getaway. But when a flash flood washes away Erin's vehicle and she is stranded at a luxury safari lodge, Erin's romantic working vacation takes an interesting turn. She awakens from her near-drowning and meets her rescuer, Nicholas - hot and brilliant, successful and caring - not at all like her abusive husband. At Leopard Rock in the steamy South African heat, Erin faces the toughest choices of her life.

Nicholas is ripped, he's smart and he's "no strings attached." The question of whether to give in or not to give in drowns Erin?s senses as she struggles with two impossible goals: ignore the exquisite physical charms of her host, and conceal every last detail whenever her controlling husband calls. On the other side, Nicholas faces impossible choices of his own, as his bon vivant playboy lifestyle may just possibly collide with feelings more powerful than lust.

Erotic. Exotic. Wild. Drowning sizzles in the African heat as one woman is stretched to the breaking point by the strength of her vows and the intensity of her seething primal desires.

This was the synopsis that sucked me in, and to tell the truth, I was not disappointed.

The abusive husband, the new hot guy, and the animals of South Africa, they all proved quite a powerful heady mix. The writer was able to weave the natural storms into the internal storms that Erin has to battle to free herself from the clutches of her husband, on her own terms.

I liked that each of the characters were filled in, except perhaps the abusive husband, but Nicholas just stole my heart. He's such a lady's man of the best kind, with his heart in the right place, and it was not too far-fetched to think how Erin could fall for him within a few weeks.

However, I also liked that she didn't just abandon her husband, but went back to fight for her heart. In the end, she makes the right choice, even though it didn't come without a fight.

OK, I won't forget to add that the erotica aspect of this book is well deserved. There are several steamy and no-holds-barred love scenes in this book. So if you're prudish, this may not be for you.

If you don't mind, then expect some heat and delicious spicy love making, lol.

Finally, this is one those books you can't stop reading, a page turner. I finished it in a few hours unlike the way I read these days - one book in a week. SMH...
