Zambian president, Michael Sata, died yesterday in a British hospital from an unnamed ailment and the country’s vice-president, Guy Scott has been appointed as interim leader.
Guy Scott is being called Africa’s first White leader by various media outlets. South Africa had white presidents during the apartheid era which ended with FW de Klerk in the early 90s. No other sub-saharan African country has ever had white presidents.
However, Guy Scott's time in office may be very short indeed. Mail and Guardian SA says the interim leader may not be able to run for president of Zambia due to constitutional clauses that have to do with parentage and ancestry.
Scott (70) is not eligible to become president because of foreign parentage rules in Zambia’s 1996 Constitution; his parents are from Scotland.
According to the BBC, elections to pick a permanent new president will be held within 90 days.
