The Ten Commandments monument in Oklahoma capitol was yesterday smashed to pieces by someone who destroyed it and then unrinated on the rubble before fleeing the scene leaving his car behind.
A suspect has now been arrested and taken into a facility for mental evaluation. He told the Secret Service that Satan told him to crash into the Ten Commandments and also to urinate on them.
According to reports, investigators say the man, Michael Tate Reed, 29, is bipolar and has been off his medications for some time. He was taken into custody after he walked into the Oklahoma City Federal Building, making threats against the President and federal government.
Reed's mother confirmed that her son has been having mental health issues, saying he was a devout Christian who loves God. However since a job-related injury, he has been having episodes of acting out against religion and authority.
The monument had been disputed in a lawsuit by the Civil Liberties Unions, which claimed that it violated the state’s ban against using public property to support church or religion. According to FOX News;
The 6-foot-tall granite monument was erected in 2012 after Republican state Rep. Mike Ritze and his family paid nearly $10,000 for it. The American Civil Liberties Union had been suing to have the monument removed, arguing it violates the Oklahoma Constitution.
Other groups have since asked to erect statues on the Capitol grounds, including one that wants to erect a 7-foot-tall statue of Satan.
