Grammys 2015 Take Me To Church! Annie Lennox, Beyonce, Common & John Legend, More...

Posted in: , ,

The Grammys have come and gone but the performances at the awards ceremony will continue to resonate for a very long time, till the next annual event, or maybe for all time! Like the performance by 80's rock & roller Annie Lennox of Take Me to Church / I Put a Spell On You with singer-songwriter Hozier. Amazing!

Beyonce also literally took us to church with her rendition of ‘Take My Hand, Precious Lord’ from the soundtrack of the movie Selma, though some complained that Ledisi who recorded it for the movie should also have done it on stage for the Grammys. But there were no complaints as John Legend and Common performed their own 'Glory', also from the same movie celebrating the 1964 Selma protest march.

Glory also salutes more recent civil rights protests in Ferguson, and around the United States after several unarmed black young men were killed by police. Pharrell Williams also referenced the #BlackLivesMatter protests during his stirring and energetic performance of 'Happy' when he raised his arms in the "don't shoot" posture by Michael Brown in Ferguson.

More social commentary also showed up as Katy Perry's "By The Grace Of God" was preceeded by by the narrative of a female survivor of sexual abuse and domestic violence. She begs anyone in such a relationship to save their lives and get off.

Other performances I enjoyed included Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett in Cheek to Cheek, Brandy Clark & Dwight Yoakam in 'Hold My Hand' and Usher's If It's Magic.
