A campaign to diversify the American currency, by a group called Women on 20s, has concluded their online petition to replace Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill. The campaign, which quickly went viral last month, offered supporters the opportunity to vote on who they would like to see on a twenty dollar bill.
The first round of voting had people choose from 15 women to four finalists, with Harriet Tubman, Wilma Mankiller, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Rosa Parks making the cut. In the final round of voting, Harriet Tubman received the highest number of votes — 118,328. Eleanor Roosevelt came in second place with 111,227 votes. Over 300,000 people took part in the votes.
The idea of changing the face of the $20 continues to be driven by social media, though it has some offline vocal supporters, including a congressman. Today, someone asked a question about it at the White House press briefing with spokesman Josh Earnest - he choose not to give any firm answer.
Women on 20s hopes that the petition and vote will appeal to Jack Lew, the current Secretary of the Treasury, who has the power to make the change.
