A typical question “Do you believe in true love?” or “Do you believe in love at first sight?” or maybe “do you believe in love lasting forever?”. Literary experts always stress out the fact that love stories have the power to reinforce faith in love. That’s why they are practically immortal. Writing academic essays on famous love stories and finding topics online may be harder than it looks as all feelings of amazement should be put aside and the writing should have its strong arguments based on literary quotes.
- Romeo and Juliet
The renowned love story ever produced, Romeo and Juliet portray a tragic love story. The tale of two teenagers madly in love with each other, yet they opposed by two feuding families is considered to be synonym to love itself. The lovers risk their lives for their love and face “untimely deaths” in pursuit of happiness.
- Tristan and Isolde
A tragic love story, Tristan and Isolde tale are told throughout centuries. The story takes place in medieval times when Arthur was a king. Isolde, the daughter of the King of Ireland, was promised to King Mark of Cornwall. Tristan, King’s Mark nephew, was escorting her to Cornwall for marriage when the two fall in love madly with each other. Their hidden romance continued throughout the Isolde’s marriage to King Mark. To summarize, the two loved ones could never be together and both died from terrible grief.
- Antony and Cleopatra
One of the most memorable and intriguing stories of all, these were historical characters. Yet the tale has gained a greater popularity after it has been dramatized by William Shakespeare and it is still popular today. A test of true love, the relationship of those two were impossible due to Cleopatra’s powerful position of the queen of Egypt. Despite the threats from anguished Egyptians and outraged Romans, the two got married. Yet their story ended tragically. Antony allowed himself to get killed when he was in a battle as he got false news about Cleo’s death, and Cleopatra took her own life too shortly after. There a common concept that great love demands great sacrifices.
- Sir Lancelot and Queen Guinevere
Sir Lancelot, the knight of King Arthur, fell deeply in love with his wife. Although Guinevere opposed their love, in time the two became secret lovers. After being caught by 12 knights, Lancelot managed to escape, yet Guinevere was captured and sentenced to death by fire. The knight returned to rescue his loved one, but they never stayed together.
- Orpheus and Eurydice
A Greek good, Orpheus fell in love with married nymph, Eurydice. When angry husband caught the couple cheating, he pursued them and Eurydice was bitten by a deadly snake. The trick of the story lies in the Orpheus’s efforts that he made to release his loved one from the underworld. He was the only one to sing the song and soften the hearts of Hades and Persephone, and Eurydice got released. But the two never made it to the surface as exaggerated Orpheus looked back at Eurydice, braking one condition, and her spirit has vanished.
I wish we had epic black romances to add to the list. I can't even think of one.
