Nigerian Woman Dead in Oikos University Shooting

Posted in: ,
A lot of us Nigerian immigrants to the United States came seeking the American Dream. Some find it, others don't, most settle for a manageable medium. The chances of us dying in road accidents or childbirth reduce drastically, but other dangers lurk around the corner. One of them has to do with the gun ownership and safety issue in America. I confess, these random shootings freak me out sometimes. This particular death hits quite close. RIP Doris Chibuko and may your family be consoled.

Doris Chibuko, 40, was born in the state of Enugu, in eastern Nigeria. She went to law school and worked as a lawyer in Nigeria. She met Efanye in college, and in 2002 they were married in a big traditional Nigerian wedding. That same year, the couple immigrated to the United States, where they had three children who are now ages 3, 5 and 8.

Her family said she loved to cook and was mostly a housewife, but she also worked part time at Villa Fairmont Mental Health Rehabilitation Center in San Leandro. Doris planned to become a nurse. Her mother came to California from Nigeria to take care of the children while Doris studied at Oikos University. She was two months away from graduating.

  5. wow this really goes to show that even if u do move to america, it doesnt mean u are 100% safe. anything can happen at anytime, anywhere. I dont think however, that being in america lowers ur chances of being in a deadly accident, there r crazy drivers everywhere and sooo many ppl r killed every year in car accidents here. Hope she has a relationship with God though. Its really sad because she has really young children.

  7. Nigerians struggle worldwide... She was not destined to become a nurse. She was destined to remain a lawyer. She probably did not go to law school in the US because she may not have had a good chance getting a law job. There seems to be good money coming from hospitals and she wanted to take good care of her kids. So sad. No where in the world is safe. RIP!

  17. I hate the sad word... imagine anyone dying and people commenting its sad ohhh... crap. hate it, find it disgusting and condescending. This is because to be sad is a feeling, and like many stories like these we read everyday, we say its sad but we quickly move on to our private issues. So why exactly is it sad because she is Human?Nigerian or we just love using that phrase when we hear about deaths??

I feel their are other expressive words to use. I don't think its sad because she has achieved so much in her space of living on this earth. Her memories, legacy and achievements will linger on. I think its painful that her family will have to endure the pain of not seeing her and grief.

I pray God will comfort their hearts and see them through the grieving process. I pray God will continue to protect our going out and coming in.

    May her spirit stay happy.
