The official draw for the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup Canada is complete and along with all the groups being announced, we now also know the cities that will be hosting the 24 qualified countries while playing their group phases. The FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015 holds in June 2015.
Again, the two countries I usually root for, Nigeria and USA are pitted together, drawn into Group D, which is already being called the group of death with Australia and Sweden. They will be playing mostly in Winnipeg and Vancouver.
So why has the group immediately been labeled the "group of death"?
USA has won the last two Olympic gold medals and advanced to the 2011 Women's World Cup final.
Australia has reached the quarterfinals in the last two World Cups.
Sweden is managed by former USA coach Pia Sundhage, who led the Americans to the feats listed above
Nigeria, possbily the best team in Africa, have won nine African Championships and reached all seven World Cups.
USA head coach Jill Ellis talked to Fox Sports following the draw.
“Certainly, we’re in the toughest group. I think it’s going to be a physically challenging group and our depth is going to come into play for us.”
“I actually think having tougher games in the first round of a major competition will prepare us for the knockout stages,” she said. “We’ve got to hit the ground running. There is not any slow introduction to this World Cup.”
USA plays Australia first in Winnipeg on June 8; followed by Sweden, also in Winnipeg on June 12; and Nigeria in Vancouver on June 16, respectively.
What do you think are Nigeria's and USA's chances at the world cup?
