Sad to report that a father of five and former New York City policeman now working as a Tarpon Springs police officer has been killed in a shooting early this morning. Authorities confirm that a suspect has been taken into custody.
Named as Charles "Charlie K" Kondek, the officer was fatally shot around 3 a.m. as released by the Tarpon Springs Police Department on their Facebook page just an hour ago. The department said;
"our hearts and prayers go out to the Kondek Family and our deepest sympathy."
Kondek, 45, was a 17-year veteran of the department who worked many years on the midnight shift, officials said. Originally from New York, he spent five years as an officer with the New York City Police Department before moving to Florida.
Authorities haven't identified the suspect other than to say he is male. The shooter initially fled in a white Hyundai sedan which crashed into a power pole, and then a pickup truck, Pinellas County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Cecila Barreda said. No other information has been released.
This new information is coming on the heels of another shooting yesterday in New York where the two police officers who were shot dead while they sat in their marked police car.
They are recently-married Wenjian Liu (top) and father-of-one Rafael Ramos (below) , and right is the man who shot them dead. He's been identified as 28 year-old Ismaaiyl Abdullah Brinsley, from Baltimore.
Ismaaiyl had shot and wounded his girlfriend on Saturday morning before targeting the cops in an apparent act of revenge for Eric Garner's death based on what he wrote on his instagram page.
Around 2.47pm yesterday afternoon, Ismaaiyl crept up behind a patrol car in Brooklyn's Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood and from the passenger side of the police van, he shot both men in the head execution style. Eye witnesses said the police officers didn't get a chance to draw their own guns and didn't see their assailant. After the shooting, Ismaaiyl walked to a subway station and killed himself.
