Part of the warehouse wall at a Morton Salt facility in the Chicago area collapsed a few hours ago, flooding cars at a nearby Acura dealership with tons of salt.
According to ABC news, no one was injured in the avalanche of salt, but at least three vehicles were buried and as many as 11 cars were damaged. Some of them were new to the dealership, others were those of customers waiting for service.
Kenneth Wojtecki, of the Chicago Fire Department, said.
"It seems they overloaded the warehouse with salt. There's a certain height they can go up. I think they went beyond that height, pushing the wall out. Personnel accounted for all their personnel so they weren't trapped. But it was adjacent to McGrath Acura."
The general manager of McGrath Acura, Noble Jones, said 8 to 11 cars got damaged, and most of them were service customers' cars. He said his team is trying to figure out which customers' cars were damaged so they don't just show up to the site. He believes all 11 cars are a total loss.
The City of Chicago's Department of Buildings is investigating and will secure the structure and perimeter. Officials said in a statement that "representatives from Morton Salt are on site and are working with a structural engineer to ensure the remaining structure is safe and supported."
Photos and video from the incident have already gone viral on social media with many joking about the slogan on the top of the Morton Salt building, "When It Rains, It Pours."
