Letting Go Of Things That No Longer Bring You Joy

Sometimes we hold onto things that instill no good feelings in us at all. These can be anything from material objects to emotions. We may hold onto them out of guilt, because of sentimental value or simply because we don’t know how to let them go. Today I’m going to try and help you alleviate some of the burdens you may be carrying. Here’s some inspiration on how to let go of things that no longer bring you joy.

Kids Old Art Work

There are some parents out there who are great at accepting a rainbow crayon-scrawled drawing from their kids, pinning it to the fridge for a few days and then throwing it away. There are many others, however, who keep every single piece of ‘art’ that their kids have drawn. Even the really strange ones! Why do we hold on to all these useless pieces of paper? Because they remind us of when our children were young. Because we are trying to hold on to memories of the past. And because attaching sentimental value to these drawings makes it even harder to screw them up and throw them away. But if you’ve got three kids and stacks of paper piling up in boxes what are you going to do? You have to turn your thinking in your head here. Keep saying that your children are not defined by the stick people family portrait they drew ten years ago. Your memories of their childhood are within you, not within their things. One great idea is to buy a Li'l Davinci Art Gallery Frame and store a few in one deep frame. And then be brave and throw the rest. You can take photos of some of your favorite scraps of paper, but then learn to let them go.

Wedding Dress After A Divorce

Have you gone through a heartbreaking divorce but still kept your wedding dress from the big day? It can be hard to let go of something so big that was a monumental part of your life. But to move forward, you have to let go of things that no longer bring you joy. One of the best things you can do is use an online wedding dress calculator to find out how much your dress is worth. And then get it professionally cleaned and sell it on to a bride-to-be that may get more joy from it.

Emotional Stress

This is one of the hardest things to let go of because it is within you and not a material object you can just throw in one fell swoop. Often we hold on to stress and pain because we think it serves a purpose. But it truly does nothing for our emotional wellbeing. We hold on to past regrets thinking rehashing them will help us in the future. We keep worrying about work, money and the future, thinking if we do it may somehow solve our problems. But honestly, has all this holding on to stress ever helped you? Write down all your stresses and regrets on a piece of paper and then burn it and say goodbye to them as you do. Cry about your past mistakes and then let them go. Take up a new hobby or learn a new skill to keep yourself occupied and stop worrying about things you cannot change. Use meditation to work on your present state of mind rather than living in the past. Work out what is causing you stress and then make positive baby steps to change these things. Think about your life in ten or twenty years. Will any of the things you are worrying about really matter then? Holding on to stress and regrets serves no value in your life.

Learn to let go and live for the moments of joy you can now create for yourself and your family.

  1. I'm guilty. Letting go is not easy at all, still have my girl's primary school notebooks when I need space for other things. Great post Myne.
