It's Been 53 Years, Happy Independence Day Nigeria?

Posted in: , ,

Over the years since I started blogging, I've either been very happy to mark the Nigerian independence on this blog or moved enough to join others in a blog round-up. This year, I'm feeling somehow apathetic. The last media chat President Jonathan had made things worse. But it's not just the leadership.

Toddlers and Tiaras No More - France Senate Votes To Ban Kid Beauty Pageants

Posted in: , ,

While I support beauty competitions, I believe they should be for adults, and with the introduction of Male Pageants, I doubt anyone can still point to gender bias in such contests. But pageants for little girls, and especially in the way they are carried out, still leave a lot to be desired.

Late Prophet Ajanaku's Widow Forced To Move Into A Rented Apartment As His family Disputes Her Status

Posted in: , , ,

Prophet Ireti Ajanaku died back in August, and less than a month later, Joy Ajanaku, his wife, has been forced to move out of the home the couple owned, and in which their family lived, into a rented apartment. This is because her late husband's family have allegedly been making life even more difficult for her since her husband died by trying to grab onto his assets.

A Nigerian Post-Graduate Student Uses Basic Science To Prove Homosexuality And Gay Marriage Wrong?

Posted in: , , ,

So a Nigerian made a scientific breakthrough over the weekend while I on a mini-break. According to the summary of his science research results as published by Thisday Live, a University of Lagos post-graduate student has used physics, chemistry, maths and biology to prove, without a doubt, that homosexuality is not proper and is physically impossible. Hear him,

A British Journalist, David Hayward, and His Government Sponsored Thoughts on Asaba and Nigeria

Posted in: , ,

So David Hayward visited Nigeria recently and wrote an op-ed for Vanguard on his impressions of the country after a few weeks in Asaba. Mr Hayward makes it plain from the first paragraph of his article that he's there for a media consultancy, and being that he met Uduaghan, the Delta State governor, and they played tennis on the same courts, it makes me believe he must have been on the purse of the government.

Did Farida Waziri Really Write This Letter to Obasanjo As Chairman of EFCC?

Posted in: , , ,

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo in an interview an EFCC publication called Zero Tolerance cast some aspersions on the former Chairman of the EFCC, Farida Waziri. She in her turn released a press statement telling him to mind his age and warning that she might be forced to, “open up on him”.

Nigerian Tribalism: A Personal Love Story, By Adaobi Tricia Nwaubani

Posted in: , ,

When I was 17, a tall, handsome doctor fell in love with me. He left Nigeria, shortly after, for his residency in America, and proceeded to prove how much he was still in love with me by dispatching mushy Hallmark cards every week – to my university during semester, and to my family home during holidays.

Ariel Castro, Ohio Kidnapper, Commits Suicide By Hanging After Just 33 Days in Jail

Posted in: , , , ,

I have followed this story from when the news first broke, so happy for the women who were able to free themselves from the monster who had kidnapped and kept them prisoners for over 10 years. The last post was when he was sentenced, I was glad the sentence was stiff enough to keep him in jail for the rest of his life.

Leaving It To God? An Easy Escape For The Pastors, Con-men and Rapists in Nigeria

Posted in: , ,

By Okechukwu Ofili

So unless you have been living under a rock, you must have heard about the Ese Walter story. If not, google Ese Walter. Now back to the story…

Ese Walter on Thursday of last week alleged that she had an intimate 1 week affair with her Pastor…Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo of COZA. The whole world (including third world and first world citizens) waited eagerly for the pastor’s response and they were not disappointed. At least if you are a Nigerian, you were not. It was the classic leave it to God response, embellished with occasional screams from an adoring congregation as the pastor made empty statements like:

Posted in: , , , ,

Yay! Imo State governor, Chief Rochas Okorocha, has just signed into law a bill which, among other things, permits women to procure an abortion when they need it. The bill was sponsored by the Majority Leader and Imo state house member representing Ahiazu Mbaise state constituency, Mrs. Ihuoma Adekunle, the law is to be cited as “Imo State of Nigeria, Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Law Number 12 of 2012”.

@StellaMagazine - Omotola Deserves a Better Title for her Cover Story

Posted in: , , ,

According to this Stella title, they believe @realomosexy is a complete unknown to their readers. And it seems, not only have they never heard of Omotola, Stella doesn't believe they'll care to hear more. That's probably why I couldn't find the original cover or the story uploaded by magazine online. And I find that appalling.

On Pastor's Sexual Affairs With Church Members - Another Woman's Experience

Posted in: , ,

I called for a conversation on this topic, and someone called the FB thread I was discussing it on a pity party, and Ese's mention of the word, "abuse" ludicrous. Seriously, can we not see that this man abused his power over her? I wonder, does he also so easily ask women not his church members or in the PCU to book hotels and taxis for him, and chastise them when they drop the ball?

To Kola Olaosebikan, The Blogger Who's Happy She Left Nigeria

Posted in: , ,

When I came across a video by Kola Olaosebikan talking about the one thing that would make her happily return to Nigeria, I clicked, I listened, I watched, I smiled and I sighed and I decided not to blog about it. She actually said many of us would do that, the typical Nigerian I-don-care attitude, but that still didn't bully me to share.

Chika Oduah's Account of Sexual Harassment at the Workplace

Posted in: ,

Chika Oduah used to work for Sahara Reporters TV in New York for a while before she moved back to Nigeria. She surprisingly mentions no names in this recounting of her experience of sexual harassment at the hands of one of her previous employers in New York and among similar activists in Nigeria. I won't do that for her either since I wasn't there, but I ask, when shall we begin to name and shame?

A Face to Corruption - A Nigerian Police Officer Haggles For Bribe

Posted in: , , ,

The stories of police demanding and collecting bribes from motorists are as rampant as they are unsubstantiated. It was one of the reasons the police IG took check posts off the roads. but some remain in the guise of enforcing traffic laws. Today, one of such stories has hard evidence, and will reach thousands of people thanks to the internet.

Which Hospital Diagnosed This Woman as "Wombless"?

Posted in: , , ,

Miracles still happen today, and indeed God works in mysterious ways. Sometimes however, we need to ask questions rather than simply swallow every story put out by so-called men of God, or allow service providers continue to get away with everything including murder. A lot of medical diagnosis in Nigeria are either completely unreliable because diagnostic equipment is lacking or the doctor is not adequately trained.

Michelle Knight Shines at Her Kidnapper, Ariel Castro's Sentencing

Posted in: , ,

Michelle Knight was the last one to be identified after the three Cleveland kidnap victims were rescued, and the last to show herself to the public. She was also the oldest and the one kidnapped the longest. She reportedly suffered several miscarriages after their kidnapper, Ariel Castro, beat or starved her while pregnant. She is also the only one who faced him in court as he was sentenced to life in prison and a thousand years more.

Police IG, Mohammed Abubakar - Please Stop These Mob Killings!

Posted in: , , ,

I believe Mob killings stem from police actions and inaction. One could say the respect for life in Nigeria has continued to wear thin because over the years, civilians had either lost trust in the government, especially in the work of the police and the judicial system which have been derailed by corruption and incompetence. Or civilians are simply emulating the brand of justice dished by the police in their extra-judicial killings.
