U.S. President Barack Obama, first lady Michelle Obama and daughters Sasha and Malia pose with 'elves' prior to the taping of TNT's 'Christmas in Washington' program on December 14, 2014  at the National Building Museum in Washington, DC. The 'elves' are former patients of Children's National Medical Center, the beneficiary of this evenings concert.

Christmas in Washington is an annual Christmas television special, and this year, the 33rd annual concert, overdid itself. There was the first family, and also famous singers including Rita Ora, to sing the carols. In more pictures below, the Obamas socialized with the elves, presented them with gifts, including a basket of children's books, and enjoyed their time at the concert.

Terrorists Raise Flag In Australian Cafe, Take 13 Customers Hostage

An unknown number of terrorists have taken up to 13 hostages in an armed siege of a cafe in Sydney, Australia. Some of the kidnapped victims have been forced to raise up a black flag with Arabic writing in a store window. Some have identified the flag as a Shahada or Black Standard flag, sometimes used in Jihad.

According to MailOnline, witnesses reported seeing staff and customers sobbing as they were forced to stand with their hands pressed against the windows of the Lindt cafe. At least two gunmen are said to be involved in the siege. One gunman is believed to have a shotgun and possibly an explosive device.

Marriage Proposal With Crane Lift Goes Horribly Wrong

A man who had planned to propose to his girlfriend in the Netherlands with a mobile crane lift, is lucky not to have landed in hospital. This is after the proposal ended with the crane toppling over and smashing the roof of her neighbour's house and forcing the evacuation of two other houses.

The man had wanted to surprise the girlfriend by lifting himself to stand before her bedroom window in a bucket attached to the crane. Then when she came to the window, he would sing her a song and pop the question.

Ben Haenow Wins 2014 X Factor Final Contest

Ben Haenow has been named this year's X Factor winner after going head to head with Fleur East in the 2014 final at Wembley Arena. The contestants, who were both mentored by Simon Cowell in the over-25s group, sang two songs in front of the judges and a 10,000-strong audience.

The winner was chosen by the public, with 10 million voting on the night. Cowell told Haenow.

"This what you've waited for for 12 years. This is what turning into a star feels like. You deserved it, you're a great guy. This is your moment."
