They say a picture is worth a thousand words so other than the title, there may not be any better caption for this photo. A lot of us think we have to be perfect to achieve our goals, be they personal or career wise, but all we need is to accept ourselves, inside and out. And when we are with the people who love us for who we are, there is freedom.
Ogo Maduewesi who shared this photo on Facebook is the founder of the Vitiligo Support and Awareness Foundation (VITSAF) in Nigeria and this is from their website.
Vitiligo is a condition in which people lose melanin – the pigment that gives skin its color – resulting in white patches of skin. While the exact cause of vitiligo is unknown, it has been confirmed that an autoimmune component plays a strong rolle in the disease. The chronic nature of the condition, long term treatment, lack of uniform effective therapy and unpredictable cause of the condition has a significant impact upon the quality of life for individuals living with vitiligo.
Vitiligo can begin at any age, but in half of all affected patients, its onset is noted before the age of twenty. In more than half, there is a family history of vitiligo or early greying of hair. In most cases, periods of rapidly extending hypo-pigmentation occur. After several months, the number and size of the light areas become stable and may remain so for several years; other episodes of pigment loss may occur later on, however often following stress or trauma, and the hypopigmentation may spread.
Most patients with vitiligo are in good general health. Although 1 – 2% of the general population has vitiligo, the incidence is 8 – 20% in people with adrenocortical insufficiency, hyperthyroidism, alopecia areata, pernicious anemia, melanoma, scleroderma, morphea, and certain types of uveitis. Three different hypotheses have been advanced to explain the cause of vitiligo: autoimmunity, neurochemical factors, and self-destruction of melanocytes. Research on the cause is continuing.

ReplyDeleteMyne I cried really hard when I saw this pic and their show of love. When I was very little my Aunty had this same condition. She was always sick and was always in pains then but people didn't know what was wrong with her. They mocked her everywhere she went. Going to the market was hell for her. Ceremonies was a No No for her,because the stare she gets from people alone was terrible. To the extent that her husband abandoned her and her kids. There are some terrible things I can't even say here now. My parents became her best friends they took care of her until she eventually died.

So sorry to read about your Aunt and what she had to go through, am really wondering if it was Vitiligo she had, vitiligo is actually not painful, there are other pigmentation disorders like scleroderma.....

My point, there are worst things and you got to live your life regardless cause you only got one, might as well make it a quality one.

Great your Cousin is so confident, bet you she had her own share of the distress before she braced it up like most of us, that is not enough to say 'Ain't nothing but a thang', I bet your cousins's is not as extensive s this lady's and she doesn't face our societies utterances which is beyond stares and comments, but telling you to your face that what you are living with is nemesis, a curse, anger of the gods and all what not.........
DeleteI work on this cause and can tell you that is not even about the extensiveness, but the fact that something is not right and it affects the appearance and most especially when it is still progressing and you cant really choose where it can be.
Even though you have seen your cousin through this, I can tell you, you dont want to live with this even 10% of the lady's.
She is a bold and positive lady, great inspiration to so many, this singular pics has impacted lives positively and am really proud and proud of her
Ogo I think you misunderstood rhapsody. She used that as a slang for the fact that you can live life regardless of vitiligo. Read her words with an open mind and you will realize that you are saying the exact same thing.

ReplyDeleteMy mother had Vitiligo. She was the only one we know of in the family to have it. I wish she could have been as comfortable in her skin as this young bride appears to be. Congrats to her on her marriage.

DeleteHope you know that Vitiligo is somewhat genetic (research says 30%, not to scare you, but feel you all should be very informed and include much more foods sich in antioxidant in your dailies.

ReplyDeleteI'm sorry for the person who mentioned foundation as if that is a prerequisite!I wish I had that young lady's confidence to go without camouflage makeup-but I don't.Its not for anyone to judge how another person ought to appear and that kind of body fascism is why people develop such chronic issues and self-hatred and sometimes feel like their life is meaningless because they are not "perfect" or "normal"...Comments such as these make me wonder about the level of self-hatred the person making them has and why they cannot see a beautiful young woman-who looks so completely happy,on the happiest day of her life.
