Tania Omotayo, Wizkid's Girlfriend, Debuts New Short Hairstyle

Posted in: ,

In new pictures, Tania Omotayo shows off her new cropped hairstyle. Some people are going for braids [see Lola Omotayo] as a way to get their hair off their face, but Tania chose to shear off her tresses. And it does suit her.

It was earlier announced that Tania Omotayo and Wizkid, one of the favorite young couples in the Nigerian entertainment industry, got back together after they broke up for several months.

The Natural Hair Movement - Only For Black Women or Should We Include Other Races?

Posted in: , , ,

One of those forums for natural-haired girls to discuss about everything from hair tips, LOCs, Big Chops, CoWashs to personal natural hair journeys is CurlyNikki.com.

Yesterday, a young white woman by the name of Sarah (or Vlogger Waterlily716 on Youtube) shared her natural hair journey, and there was some sort of outcry, as most of the site's readers felt the site should just be for black women and nut just any curly woman, especially when they are not at all black.

The comments section now has almost 550 comments most of them insisting that other races should not be involved in "the natural hair movement."

Lupita's Side Hustle in College Was Braiding Hair For Friends, Watch Her Show Her Skills!

Posted in: , , , ,

Lupita Nyong'o is smart, beyond talented, and all around amazing. But what most of us didn't know was that she loves braiding hair for her friends.

On her recent photoshoot with Vogue [see here], the Oscar-winning actress filmed an intimate hair video where she braided a group of her closest girlfriends' hair—basically giving us a direct view into what it’s really like to be her bestie.

I was expecting to see Chimamanda Adichie there, and though she's not, it's easy to see that the two will be besties in due time.

Lupita explains that she learnt how to braid hair in Kenya intending for it to be her side hustle while in college and graduate school in the US, but while she braided her college friends hair all the time, she didn’t have the heart to charge them after all.

Beyonce Puts Blue Ivy's Hair in Afro Puffs, Goes Back To Her Blond Curls

Posted in: , , , ,

Jay Z and Beyonce seem to have finally decided to make sure Blue Ivy's hair ceases to be a talking point but keeping it combed and in a bun at all times.

They were photographed on a yacht after their Miami "On the Run" concert with Blue Ivy and the little girl was rocking her natural hair in two puffs.

Beyonce herself has removed her long braids and is back to rocking strawberry blonde curls. She and Jay Z looked genuinely happy as a couple as they spent quality family time with Blue Ivy.

I hope people can finally stop with the Blue Ivy hair petitions.

Kim Kardashian Goes Blonde Again, Which Color Do You Prefer on Her?

Posted in: , ,

Newly married Kim Kardashian West shared some pictures yesterday which made some think she had gone from brunette to blonde again. Kim also had blonde and ombre hair soon after she gave birth to her daughter North West [see here].

She shared the picture on her Instagram page and was also later photographed with her new hair in New York wearing an all black leather outfit.

Kim later cleared the air by stating that the hair was just a very real looking wig and she did not dye her hair. Some says she looks a bit like Ciara or Beyonce with the straight blond locks, do you agree?

Posted in: , ,

The official pictures from the Half of a Yellow Sun movie premiere in London are out [first post], and we can now see clearly the threaded hairstyle that Chimamanda Adichie wore to the event. It echoes those threaded styles of old that some of us had our primary schools make us wear sometimes.

Michelle Obama Debuts New Ombre and Longer Hairstyle

Michelle Obama had quickly switched from the fringe which she wore at the beginning of the year to her more usual side parting by Mother's Day in May. By the summer, her hair had become shoulder length as was shown on her cover of the Parade Magazine. For her latest hair cut, the FLOTUS has added golden highlights to the ends. Nice...

How Long is Enough? Woman with Longest Dreadlocks Vows Never To Cut 55ft Long Hair

Posted in: , ,

One could call Asha Mandela the real life Rapunzel, her 55ft long dreadlocks are almost two-stories high, stretching from upstairs to downstairs. But this is not a Disney movie - in real life the weight of such long locks have an effect on the body. Asha Mandela's doctors have warned her that her hair, which weighs three stone could paralyse her. However, she says she will never cut it.

Box Braids - A Good Summer Protective Hairstyle

Posted in: , , ,
Keri Hilson

Myne called this a wife material hairstyle in this post about Toke Makinwa, Toolz and Tiwa Savage. I'll rather say braids are more of a protective hairstyle for the summer period. Nothing kills African textured hair than the heat and humidity of summer in most parts of America, which is just like typical hot Nigerian weather.

Meet The Woman With The Largest Afro In The World

Posted in: , ,

As endorsed by the Guiness World Book of Records, Aevin Dugas has the world's biggest afro - which measures four-and-a-half foot around. When left loose around her head, Aevin struggles to see out from underneath her large afro, and so she often has to style it up properly. It took her 14 years to get to this length and fullness and Aevin says she loves the bouncy curls.

Dangers of Long Hair - Beyonce's Weave Caught in a Fan

Posted in: , ,

While performing at a show in Canada, Beyonce's hair got caught and stuck in a spinning fan near the stage where she sat to sing. Surprisingly, she continued singing without missing a beat. The show organizers quickly put off the fan, and her loyal bodyguard helped her to untangle and finally cut the weave. See video below;

An Easy Way To Soften Naturally Kinky Hair

Posted in: , ,

By Chioma Iwunze-Ibiam

I wish I’d learned about the wonders of apple cider vinegar much earlier. All those years of groaning about hard it is to manage natural kinky hair would have been different. Last week, after I’d watched a How To Grow Beautiful, Softer and Shinier Hair video on Youtube, I decided to do something different.

First, I went to a department store. I bought 50cl of honey, 50cl of Aqua Rapha yogurt  and a bottle of Safari apple cider vinegar (and the ACV was so cheap. It cost less then N200 naira).  And I made my own conditioner.

First, I put a glop of yogurt in a cup. Then, I added a few spoons of honey, two tea spoons of apple cider vinegar, one table spoonful of mayonnaise (because it contains eggs and vegetable oils) and two spoonfuls of my Henna deep conditioner. I whisked these into a thick paste and proceeded to shampoo my hair. Again, I had put a few drops of the apple cider vinegar into my bucket of water.

Then, I parted my very think full head of hair and proceeded to wash and rinse. I wrapped a towel round my wet hair, just long enough to get excess water off my hair, before I brought in my homemade conditioner.

What is Difference Between Relaxed and Texlaxed Hair?

Posted in: , ,
Texlaxed Hair
In the comments to my last hair post, some asked what the difference was between relaxed and texlaxed hair. I had read about texlaxing on a few blogs, and seen some videos of people who had texlaxed their hair, but I still had to ask my stylist exactly what she meant when she brought it up as an option.

Basically, she said, it was the same as relaxing, you use the same chemicals to straighten the texture of the hair. However, in texlaxing,

1. the relaxer is diluted with natural oils and conditioners,
2. it is applied strand by strand like usual, but kind of combed into the hair
3. it is not allowed to stay on long enough to completely stretch out the hair.

The result is that some of your hair is texturized, some of it is relaxed, some may even remain completely unstraightened depending on the texture of your natural hair. Below is what my hair looks like after I shampooed off the flat-ironing. I'll be sharing more posts of how I try to keep my hair healthy as time goes on.

The Hair Wars - Team Natural or Team Relaxed

Posted in: , ,

So I made a huge decision about my hair recently. I've never been a natural hair nazi, but I did have an aha moment about natural hair that made me keep mine for so long. I don't know if I've said it before but when I first cut my hair, it was because of a hair accident, and the plan was to switch back to relaxed as it grew. After about 6 months, I texturized it as a first step. It still had curls but not as tight as usual.

While in that state, we went to see my brother in law and his family. His two years old daughter who had natural hair was so excited to see my hair, and followed me around everywhere, and each time I carried her, her hands went to my hair, touching it and then hers, or just rubbing it in a soothing way.

It was such an eye-opener for me on how having an adult woman with natural hair around them would definitely affect a young girl, and how they viewed themselves, and their hair. That was also the time around when we had just started trying to concieve and I was like, if I'm going to have a daughter who will come into this world with tight curls on her head, then mine had to be the same way. When we got back from the trip, I gradually trimmed my hair till the texturized part was gone.

Natural Indian or Peruvian Hair Extensions Vs Synthetic?

Posted in: , , ,

Before I go on, let me state categorically that I do NOT believe in possessed hair extensions, natural or synthetic. Even before natural Indian hair extensions became popular in the Nigerian market, such stories as the one below have always made the rounds in Christian and secular circles. I guess they are meant to discourage those who some pastor or spiritual types think want to look "better than God made them". It may also be a way of staking authority over women's bodies, minds and actions.

A contact on Facebook tagged me in the above ad for their hair extension business, and before long, they had to qualify it with this quote. - "Mide's Mane is not Brazilian/Indian/Peruvian. It is luxury virgin hair designed specifically under the brand name." I'm guessing they got some questions and negative comments on their initial pictures. If you haven't heard or read about how this distinction between natural and synthetic extensions might be necessary, and why synthetic may be preferable, read Rachel Edjeren's story.

I think it's good that Rachel followed her spirit, but trying to cause mass hysteria, or foisting her fears and insecurities on others is another thing altogether. I wear my hair unrelaxed but that does not rule out using extensions, and even then, I will not try to use my own justifications for cutting my hair to shoe horn or scare other women into doing the same.

What do you guys think?

Finding Styles for Mid-Length Natural Hair

Posted in: , , ,

Before I did the big chop to my hair, there was no transition, or any epiphany or decision to go natural. I consider myself lucky with regards to my hair, which I think I get from my mum, who has long and abundant healthy hair even now in her sixties. My hair is usually full and dark, the edges don't fall off easily, and it can grow.

As some of you have experienced yourselves, or may have guessed, it has not been easy for me to maintain my hair, and have it growing and healthy at an optimal level. And this is beyond that the hair is relaxed or in it's natural curly state. As a Nigerian who grew up in Nigeria, I am used to handing my hair over to salon stylists, and barely adding enough daily hair cream to get by. I'm now learning how to do it myself.

Let me not lie though, I still go to the salon regularly, maybe like once every couple of months for deep conditioning, a proper comb out, and sometimes to get the hair flat-ironed.
