Overcoming Fears & Finding Purpose - Lupita Nyong’o At Massachusetts Conference for Women

Lupita Nyong’o, Academy award–winning actress was the keynote speaker for the 10th annual Massachusetts Conference for Women on December 4, 2014 which had a sold-out crowd of 10,000 attendees.

The award winning actress spoke on how she was able to overcome her fears in order to achieve her dream of being an actress and helping to tell stories that matter in front of the camera. She explains dreams as a portal to one's purpose, and talks about how, in order to achieve her's she had to do the following.

She had to unchain herself from indecision, cut through fear, jump over her ego, embrace her vilnerability and confront a great deal of impostor syndrome.

As Lupita talked about her personal journey to becoming an actress - the sometimes crippling self-doubt that she struggled with along the way, she burst into tears.

“I wept just as I am now, because it was so hard to admit that I wanted to be something so improbable."

Lupita's introduction;

Lupita Nyong’o made her feature debut in Steve McQueen’s Academy Award® winning film “12 Years a Slave.”For her portrayal as Patsey, Nyong’o received the Academy Award® in the category of “Best Supporting Actress” as well as numerous awards such as the Screen Actors Guild® award and the Critics’ Choice award.

This summer she begins production on the J.J. Abrams-directed “Star Wars: Episode VII.” Next she will lend her voice to Jon Favreau’s “The Jungle Book” as well as co-produce and star in a film based on Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s novel “Americanah.”

Nyong’o is also a filmmaker, having served as the creator, director, editor and producer of the award-winning feature-length documentary, “In My Genes,” about the treatment of Kenya’s albino population.

Nyong’o is a Lancôme Brand Ambassadress and was seen as one of the faces of the Miu Miu Spring 2014 campaign.
